ADVICE needed on new anti-inflammatory

Hi, my 21 year old son has ankylosing spondylitis. He also has ulcerative colitis. At the moment he is taking 90mgs of arcoxia once a day for the AS but the effects are wearing off. He has to be careful what he takes because of the UC as some meds irritate the stomach etc. The consultant wants him to take a anti-tnf drug but some days he is ok and doesn't want to go down that route at the moment. So anyone. Got any ideas for another anti-inflammatory that would suit his needs? Many thanks.

Hi Franny and welcome to CP. Sorry your son's having such problems at such an early age. I've seen some of the newer drugs have good success rates but I myself do better on a much older kind of outdated med called Indocin. I dont have to take it every day to get results and its much easier on my GERD then some of the others while still providing me with some pain relief.

My other thought for him would be Celebrex and even though those class of meds like celebrex and bextra were removed and relabeled and put out again the benefits outweigh the cardiac warnings in some and relatively healthy people without previously diagnosed cardiovascular disease.

There's a couple of options and I hope you find something that will work.

Hi Franny, I think I would talk to hre gastro about some kind of an anti-inflamm, he may know what he can take that will not get the gut kicked in, last thing he needs is the UC flaring. Has anyone ever mentioned any of the biologics for the AS, they usually help with joint pain too.
