Psychologist for chronic pain

Hi All,

I have made an appt. to see a psychologist for chronic pain. I had a really bad set back after a physical therapy appt. and I decided I need to learn some new ways to cope.

Have any of you had some success on this path. I am hoping she will help me find ways to put the pain perhaps up in the cloud where they store all the digital stuff now and I won't have to worry about it.

A good psychologist can be extremely helpful. Many of us have gone this path and learned a lot a long the way. It is not a sign of weakness either reaching out for some extra help. It takes a very strong person to live the life we live and we all need all of the help we can get.

I had an excellent psychologist and she was worth her weight in gold to me. My first couple of visits were awkward in the beginning, but that soon changed. I actually got to the point of looking forward to my appointments with her.

I agree with straydog/Susie a good psychologists can be so helpful. Make sure to look for one that speciality is chronic pain patients...and be patient with the process took me 3 tries to finally get a good one and still took me time to open up to him with my feelings I was in a fragile state as I have very bad family background...Yes try to find a psychologists

Hi All,

Just want to report after first practical session with pain management psychologist. She is very nice and seems to know all about chronic pain. I am very hopeful that she will be able to reduce my pain levels.

I thank you all for your support and will report and ask questions as I go along.

I'm so pleased you started this thread. I had an appointment with a psychologist and had to cancel it. I couldn't make up my mind whether to go for it. Again or not but think I will now I've read how well you got on.

Hope you get lots out of going to see her.

Sometimes it may take seeing a couple of different ones till you find the one that fits too, So, if you don't connect with the first one, do not get discouraged, you will find one that you are comfortable with. I was very lucky with mine and I got to where I looked forward to my weekly visits. She helped me in so many different ways and on different levels. Our appts were not about just health issues. That was my first time ever seeing someone and I am so glad that I found her.

Never be ashamed or worried about what others think if you ever decide to take this direction. It takes a very strong person to live the kind of life we do. We need all the tools available to help us maintain.

Hi All,

Just want to say that I have been seeing a psychologist for chronic pain for the last three weeks.

For all of you out there with chronic pain this is a very big help.

I am so pleased this is working well for you.

I believe it's a whole different animal,...a therapist familiar with working with CP patients, vs., for example, relationships, adolescents, etc.

My last therapist had no clue about the impact CP had on my life, both personal and familial, but she was great when it came to other things.

Agreed, finding the right fit can be an extraordinary benefit!
