Good evening,
I am new here. I have chronic pain from Disc Degenerative Disease, Disc Herniation and Scoliosis. I am on Percocet 5-325 and Oxycontin extended release taken every 8 hours. I was in excruciating pain this week, so I, admittedly took 5 Percocets a day, when I am only allowed to take 4. I ran out of Percocet today, and it cannot be refilled for ten more days. I do have Butrans patch here. My spine dr. prescribed it recently, but I was frightened of side effects, so I did not take it. I am afraid of withdrawal symptoms from Percocet. If I use the Butrans patch will it alleviate withdrawal symptoms? very anxious. I appreciate any help.

Welcome to HW. Why would you have w/ds if you have the Oxy-C on board?

Not sure running out of ir meds is the right time to try something you were previously afraid of and especially Butrans. It can be a tricky med. Some do good on it others not. The higher your blood levels of opiates the stranger the reaction will be and seeing as how you have the extra oxy on top of the oxy-base I personally wouldnt want to try my luck. You could very well through yourself into a greater amount of symptoms. Not to mention none of this scenario has been okay'd by your prescribing Dr and could inadvertly lead to a contract violation if you have one or loss of your pain management treatment.

We really get this more then you can imagine and we really wish that folks caught in a pain flare would seek our help and advice before making the choice to take more meds instead of after when helping you could prove too late if your caught running out early.

Hindsights 20/20 as they say and I sure hope this works out for you and your not one of those who have to come back to ask how to find a new Dr. They are getting so strict about things these days and not giving too many second chances or empathy and understanding of pain increases and self medicating.

Hi Margaux. Like Vickie mentioned, since you also take Oxycontin, you should not experience withdrawal symptoms - the active ingredient in both Percocet and Oxycontin is oxycodone. What mg. is the Oxycontin? Regardless, your body probably wont 'miss' the 25mg from the Percocet you've been taking. But definitely from now on, don't increase the dosage of anything you take without asking your doctor first - it's just not worth the problems it can cause. Hope it all works out ok for you.
