So I went to the ER a few about a month ago due to pain and other things, the ER dr. prescribed me valium to help with the pain along with the hydro's that I was already taking. I called my PM Dr. the following week and he represcribed more valium. The valium for some reason has worked the best for relieving most of the pain in my back,, of course with the 5mg hydro. I called this week after seeing him last week to get my prescriptions renewed and he changed me to flexeril, can I expect anything close to the same relief with the flexeril?

Hi Lee.

Valium is a great muscle relaxant. Unfortunately it's also addictive in higher doses. My pain doc doesn't want me to even have 1 mg a day, but my PCP says he's wrong about that.

Your doc probably is afraid you will need higher and higher doses of Valium, hence the Flexeril. A lot of people get good relief with Flexeril.

I can't take Flexeril because along with my tramadol it gives me serotonin syndrome. Most people aren't that sensitive, but do check your meds for interactions at any of the online sites. Then just be aware of the symptoms of serotonin syndrome.

Lee, all I can tell you is to give flexeril a shot and do not sabotage yourself thinking it will not work. Negatove thinking, even just a little, can cause a medication not to work as well as it might.

My only experience with valium happened 25 years ago when I was a teenager. I took one and an hour later I was zonked out and slept for 22 hours. So to me it is a strong medication but flexeril is a good one as well.

Hi Lee,

I think everyone is different, some meds work for one person but not another, I'd give it try for sure though.

I have Flexeril but don't take it very often as it makes me so drowsy, if taken at night I'm still drowsy the next day.

The change from Valium to Flexeril is due to the high level of abuse. Flexeril knocks me out or makes me feel like I'm drugged. Valium has always worked well and I've taken it for several different thing. I've also taken valium for long time periods and not had any problems getting off of it when there was no longer a need for it. I did it in a decreasing dosage over a time frame. My dr wasn't even aware I was tapering off of it until after I had done it. But, that's just me.

thanks everyone, I am going to go get the flexeril today and give them a try, I just know the comfort level with the valium was nice...... No squirming, pacing, or the laying down flopping around like a worm on a hot road, I hope that they will be somewhat effective like the valium.... If not I will wait until I see him again and plead my case.
