Lump in hip causing new pain and numbness

Has anyone had increased pain & numbness in a leg that coincided with finding a lump in the area of the sciatic nerve (in the hip)? Could the lump be putting pressure on the sciatic nerve? I'm kinda worried about this. Just found the lump earlier this week & my breakthrough pain is through the roof!
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I have an appointment with my pcp on Monday & just trying to deal with the added pain until then..

Definitely get to that appointment and yes if it's big enough it can certainly apply pressure on the nerve any nerve for that matter. The best thing I can think of to try to get some relief is to kind of experiment with position to see if you can find one that possibly eases the pressure off some. I have sciatica so I certainly "feel" you. It has to be one of the worst annoying pains there are.

How does a person get past the worry once you discover a lump and all you can think of is what the heck could this thing be? It's scary.

I have a lump or two that cause similar constriction, and that is not that uncommon. If the muscles or other soft tissue constrict around the nerve, it can kick-start the sciatic pain again.

I work with my PT using various techniques to help flush the area.

But before I do anything, I agree with Vickie, go to your doctor/s and get them checked out and see what the masses are. They may be totally harmless, just a pain in the butt, so to speak. But once you find out what they are you'll have a better idea how to treat them.

Doc visit went ok. He thinks the lump may be a lipoma & if it gets bigger he wants a surgeon to biopsy and cut the thing out. So it's wait & watch on the lump for the next couple of weeks as I just discovered the thing last week. Ultrasound of the area next week.

Right now he thinks the new pain is from two sources, but not necessarily from the lump; a pinched sciatic nerve and bursitis of the hip. He suggested cortisone injections for the hip but I had bad experiences with epidural steroids so I passed for now. I don't know what he did when he manipulated the area, but whatever it was has put me into a full flare in the hip. I've never had this much pain in the hip. Holy cow! So it's PT for now and wait & watch.

Regarding the steroid injection in the hip-anyone out there with experience with hip cortisone injections? If this keeps up I may reconsider as this thing is really quite painful.

I had it done twice will never have another one. If you plan on sitting around for days it might help but I have 2 little kids mine just got worse and it still gives me problems 6months later

I had an ortho Dr check out my hip pain - determined it was bursitis in the hip. After 6 weeks of PT didn't help he gave me a cortisone shot -- started feeling better in a couple of days and back to normal within 6 weeks. That was about 2 years ago now and I haven't had any pain or problems in that area since.

Since I used an ortho, he was VERY experienced with cortisone shots - said he gives about 2 a day and over a 15 year career that ads up. I personally would not let my PCP or anyone else (not even my rheumy) give the shot.

Wow polar opposites with experiences but great to hear from ppl. I've been literally gritting my teeth in pain from both the bursitis and sciatica all week as it hasn't really subsided much since last week. I work full time and it isn't easy as most of the time I'm sitting at my desk or driving. I tried working out last night for the first time since this flare & had a tough time also which makes matters worse as I lose muscle and stability when I don't exercise. So it's a double edged sword.
Still waiting on PT to schedule a first time visit. I have new insurance so it's taking forever. So I search the internet for exercises to avoid with this type of problem & find out most of my work out is bad.
Lynwood, did u have any side effects from the injection? How deep did they have to stick the needle to get to the correct location?

No side effects for me - the spot was a bit more sore than a usual shot for a bit longer, but no big deal. Since it was to my side and slightly to the back (and I don't like looking at needles as they go in) I really have no idea how far in it was. Seemed like a pretty small needle and I think it was only 2 g? of cortisone.

Good question, and really good observations about how varied the replies are.

My PMD gently suggested injections for my hip (they're both artificial so frankly, I'm not convinced), but I've never done it. So I cannot share any information with you about that.

I do, however, have experience with injections in the shoulders and for me, in that regard, they brought a world of relief I just could not get, even with PT,...and as anyone here who knows me can attest to, I'm avid about physical activity, PT, exercise, hydration,....all that stuff.

My injections are always done by my ortho as well, and I wouldn't dare let anyone else do them! Let us know what you decide....
