Butrans and Xanax

So apparently these are conflicting because of increased risk for respiratory depression. Is anyone taking Butrans with any benzo? I take xanax .5 about 3x per day (RX 4) and occasionally on worse days I take Valium (do not take both the valium and xanax on the same day).

I'm pretty upset about this and want to take off my patch right away!

I don't think you should mix the two. Would hate to read that you wound up in the ER on the forums. It's up to you.

Alot of folks are on a benzo along with a narcotic. I was actually on the biggest no-no known to pharmacology for years,methadone and xanax have caused more accidental overdoses than any other combo. I however did not get to the max dose in a day but built to it over year's and the same PM prescribed both. I did eventually leave the xanax behind because I no longer needed it and it bothered my kids that I was on them both.

All narcotics cause respiratory depression as do all benzodiazepines and that's giving you a double whammy. If your prescribed both meds by the same Dr he obviously is aware of the fact.If you are getting them from different drs they both need to be aware of the fact and decide if the benefits outweigh the risks. As a CPer I would be more apt to give up the benzo if necessary than sacrifice my pain relief.

Not sure why your Dr would prescribe both xanax and valium but mixing the two of those whether both in a day or every few days has potential risks itself without adding in the bup.

That all being said whatever pain meds you choose the risk is no greater than with the butrans.

"No greater than with the butt and" - did you mean Butrans? LOL, I hope so, because I don't think there's much I can do about my butt. It helps me to balance and such.

So really appreciate your insight, again, since I am new at this. I did read up on it and turns out that almost all narcotics are contraindicated for benzos! I'm kicking myself for not knowing that. And I've been on xanax for years. Vicki, xanax and valium are different medications and do work differently, that is why I have them both, for different situations. They come from my psychiatrist but my pain doc is aware, of course. They're in regular communication.

The stupid spellchecker may be able to spell but grammar is not its forte`. Lol and I corrected them. I can see butt out of the butrans but how did it get canal out of xanax????

Ha, and I thought 'canal' was just some drug I had never heard of.
