Flexor tendon surgery with 2nd re-rupture surgery

Hello!  Been awhile since Ive been on here, have checked in a couple times but have had A LOT going on.

 I cut my finger almost off. the bone not broke but nerves and tendons were. I guess the zone 2 that I sliced off (near knuckle and palm side) is refered to as 'No Mans Land'. my first surgery and some sessions of physical therapy later Doctor found that I re ruptured it and needed 2nd surgery. At that time I was almost 4 weeks post op.

I was upset because this has left me litterally with 1 hand and unable to do many things. I still had stiches in from the 1st surgery!. I am still in pain. and getting restless to do things.

I tried using the search key and could find nothing. I also have googled and the only thing I find is what the surgery is about.

I would love to hear from anyone that has had this ir this type of surgery. How long is this going to keep me from doing things? when will I be out of pain? Why does my wrist hurt so bad now? My surgeon gives generic answers so thats why Iam looking for real life experience.

Its hard being blocked from doing things that I should be able to do, as I do suffer from back troubles so Im still limited but need to be active for my good health. I do walk and simple things like that but I want to continue sewing, cooking, ect   this is my right hand and of course Im right handed.

Please, any info will help!

Sophia welcome back and sorry to hear of your dilemma! Surgeon is giving you generic and yes likely evasive answer's because he really has none. Every trauma such as yours is different and healing is the same and there's no way to gauge how long nerve cells are going to take to regenerate, your hands are flush with highly specialized nerves for feeling and think about all those kinds of feelings your fingers and hands do? Grasping, soft touch, heat and cold, lots of tiny nerve endings that don't regenerate anywhere near the rate other cells do. Its a very complex deal also very slow with hit and miss attempts to reattach to the right area's. Your still very early out unfortunately and could see many more weeks or months before an even close to normal hand in function again. Some nerves fail to ever return to normal but its still way to soon to even think about that happening.


The object here is go slow and don't push your healing, allow it the time it needs to heal properly as that's your best chance at returning to normal function. OT and PT can show you some exercises to help strengthen all the damaged ligaments and tendons also giving yourself a better chance at recovering. Ask your Dr if its too soon and set something up for you and they especially OT can give you a better timeline as to where you should be post-op wise in the healing process.

I know what PT is but what is OT?

PT is such a slow process itself. The little that I got started on before the rerupture was taking my left hand and gently bending right hand fingers at each knuckle. I did make a new appt for 2 days earlier with the surgeon so I can ask about PT and getting a new splint.

Im hoping I can start using this hand sooner rather than later but will take it carefully as you said, Im itching to sew and things but dont want to ruin better use of it later by speeding things up when I shouldnt.

Even if I get 80% use back ...i'll take it!
