I was diagnosed today with ulnar neuropathy in my right hand. I tore my ring finger off 12 years ago and was left with a 3/4" stub. After seeing the specialist today I started doing research on the internet about this condition. Everthing I read says that this condition affects the small pinky finger and half of the ring finger. I have no pain in the little finger. It's mainly in my middle finger, the ring finger stub, and back of hand. Amount of pain changes throughout the day. When it's severe a hard hand shake will put me to the ground. I'm suppose to start therapy next week (steroid injections and a process to drive the meds into my hand) My doctor says that I am not "normal" anymore due to the loss of the finger. My hand has allways hurt a little but now the pain is constent as of the last 6 months. Is it possible that the nerves from my lost finger have now gotten into my middle finger which would make his assesment correct? But again, no pain in little finger. Please help!!!!

My hands may be the only part of my body that I haven't injured somehow.

I really have no information for you.Someone more knowledgeable than me will come along.

That's a good attitude and very true.Most here have more serious problems than me.

I'm lucky to have a good Pain Management Doctor that doesn't require me to have shots in my back like most do.

Are you taking any of the Nerve Meds such as Lyrica(sp) or Nuerotin(sp)?

I've been dealing with it without taking anything. I'm a product of the late 60's and prefer not to ingest anything at this point in my life. However, I forgot to ask my Dr today about Lyrica, took it about 8 years ago for severe pain after hernia surgery due to the damage that was done to my nerves at the operation site. It worked in a matter of minutes. Since that was a nerve issue it may work for what I have now. I just don't want to take it long term but if it works and I can handle my daily pain I'll take it a day before golfing. Love the game and they can cut off my hand and I'll still find a way to swing. Live in Wisconsin and it sucks to spend 5 months a year without playing.

Welcome to the CP forum and sorry for your situation but to answer your question yes it's entirely possible that the nerves torn apart from the loss of the finger have grown into the path or attached themselves to nerves that cover other appendages. Nerves do not do well healing and growing or reattaching when torn. They basically look for like cells and aren't choosey and precise in doing so. This is why spinal cord injuries and amputation causes such issues as paralysis and phantom pain.

I can certainly see the diagnosis that he gave being possible and your correct in thinking that the lyrica would be a good idea. I believe I would even call and see if you could get a script called in and if not lyrica one of the others.personally I have gotten good results with the lyrica but with these class meds what seems to work for one person is another's nightmare.

Thank you so much Vickie, I have been thinking for some time that the loss of the finger had some type of nerve thing going on. This is such a great site and will keep on looking at posts since being 60 years old I may be able to help someone else with something I've gone through in the past.
