My doctor put me on the Butran's 10mg Patch for pain from Fibromyalgia along with Lyrica 600mg. We tried this because Tramadol did nothing for the pain I was feeling. I am not starting day 3 of the patch and have not felt any difference in my pain levels. How long am I supposed to wait before I either feel less pain or call the doctor to tell him its not working and maybe add a second patch?

Hey peme.

I wouldn't add any early.Mainly because your Doctor wouldn't like it.

I would call them and tell them what you just stated.

I would imagine a 7-day patch is at it's peak at day 3.Just a guess.

If it isn't helping with pain your Doctor should know this.

Hey peme...Totally agree with TM, though I have no experience with Butrans patch.  Please Do Not Change Anything without consulting you doctor.  I would think that would be VERY dangerous.

I am a newby to the Fentanyl patch.  I'm having issues with SEs and no measureable pain relief yet.  I consulted with my PM doctor and nurse just Wednesday.  I'm hopeful that with time, my serum levels will regulate and I will feel results/relief.

Your doctor needs to know.  He will work with you to adjust dosage.  I don't mean to frighten you, but I cannot stress enough, that you should not adjust your dosage without consulting him...NOW.

Butrans is not a med that successfully gives much relief unfortunately and because of the nature of the design you won't ever "feel" this med kick in. You may expect relief of some sort by now and if at the end of the run on the first patch you don't then I would certainly call and let them know.

You may want to use one of the med interaction programs at medscape or drugdigest because there are many different things that cause interaction with butrans main ingredient. Since you will not "feel" this med enter your system its not wise to add more without Dr approval or take anything else he doesn't approve first since you won't know when too much is too much.

I would think tramadol to butrans is a strange jump myself and there's certainly better alternatives to go to first so not sure why he chose to make that jump.

I also just started on the butrans patch this week. I've only had mine on for a little over 24h, but my doc told me that if I am not getting any relief after 2-3 days, I should add a second 10 ug/h patch. So I'm guessing it usually takes 2-3d for the patch to take effect. However, I certainly wouldn't add a second patch without first getting your doctor's permission. But I would think that if you are still not feeling any relief by Monday, it'd be appropriate to call and talk to your doc about possibly adding a second patch.

Give it some time. I have been on Butrans (started at 10, reduced to 5) for 6 months for periphrial neuropathy as a result of a fractured spine and severe damage to the sciatica. I have spent 7 years trying everything I could find, lyrica, Percocet, acupuncture, spinal cord stimulator implant...etc.

Butrans has to build up, so don't give up. It is not like taking a Percocet or morphine where you get relief in very quickly. Initially it took about 10 days and lots of fighting nausea, but for the first time in about 5 years I can now sleep through the night without waking up in intense pain and sometimes screaming. I am now able to do hikes again and take stairs without being down for several days. Always keep trying, do your own research until you find something that works. For me it was a combination of three things that finally got me my life back.

I would give it more time. The amount of medicine in your system will increase slowly until it, hopefully, reaches a therapeutic level and gives you some relief.

My mom and sister both have Fibro and they haven't found relief with narcotics. The meds for nerve pain have helped them. I do remember it was trial and error and they both ended up with different meds.

I feel for those of you with Fibro pain because it seems to be very hard to treat. It sounds like your Dr is working to find you relief. The jump to Butrans does seem to be a big one, but hopefully it will give you the relief you deserve.
