I have a family member who is having back pain. I made the comment to alternate heat and ice. Someone told her to never use heat for low back pain because it could "burn the nerves". That comment floored me!!! I have been in constant pain for 7 years from my back. Each person responds differently. But that comment just went all through me bc it isn't true. I am going to have to blow that off so I can get some sleep. Thanks for the vent.

ROFL, well, I was a licensed massage therapist for 13 years...I guess they taught us to burn the nerves in school then....LOL!

Thats what I was going to say I guess all those massage therapist and chiropractors and dont forget the physical therapist burn the nerves.

If a pt is a diabetic they are warned against using heat due to a condition called diabetic neuropathy. That condition, in some cases, the pt can't feel if something is too hot and can burn themselves. I personally use heat. My muscles don't like the cold.

Thank you!!! It made me so aggravated at the ignorance and being misinformed. I use heat daily. And probably couldn't move otherwise. It was just an opinion. And we are all entitled to them. But might as well tell me the sky has polka dots. I'm over it!!
Very concerned about my friend. From the sound of it she may have fractured her tailbone, from falling on ice. She landed on her buttocks. But is describing pain levels as associated w nausea, feeling like she will pass out. I'm trying to encourage her to go to the ER immediately. She doesn't want to bc she doesn't have health insurance. I'm very concerned. My heart goes out to her.

Many hospitals have clinics that operate on a sliding scale. I suggest she call the local facilities and ask. While there isn't much that can be done for such an injury, visualizing the fracture (if there is one) will prevent other complications such as bone fragments migrating to undesirable locations.
