New to pain medacines-Is there a certain law for getting pain relief?

Would anyone be willing to tell me how the heck you get Oxycontin or Oxeycodene any type of pain medicines strong enough to be prescribed to you?I went to a pain management specialist he gave me a drug test and said i was there to early for my pain?What if your in pain how do you get to a doctor to early?I gotta go through mths of rehab to see if i am in pain???Really does everyone have to do this at pain management doctors?Is this the protocol to get relief form severe pain??I need surgery to see if i really am in pain? I need mths of rehab ?Seriously?BTW I'm in no way shape or form looking for a cheap high.I went to a mental the hospital 17 days to get off Ativan and i was prescribed Xanax but refused it and hydrocodene sp as well?I cant even spell it much less want it but from what i hear they are better then hydrocodene sp ?Sorry im not good at this type thing like medications ect? shakehead

different requirements in different countries. different states, etc, etc. and i no clue where ya from?

Hi Denise & welcome to the forum. I am a little confused with your post. I don't understand why the dr said you were early. Did you have an injury of some kind or what?

When people first start with pain mgt, yes physical therapy is often ordered, along with injections to attempt to lessen the pain. A lot depends on the type of physical problem you have & then a treatment plan is geared towards that.

Because the dr is a pain mgt dr does not mean he will just write a script for narcotics to a patient. Drs are under the glass by the DEA, CDC & NIH so its a very controlled & restrictive environment. This is the very reason that a GP will hardly ever write a script for pain meds. Apparently you are not aware of all the hype the past several years concerning treatment of chronic pain. We all have had to jump through hoops to get help & many times we feel that we are on the short end of the stick too. What can I say, with so many heavy hitters telling these drs what they can rx & how much it makes it tough for some of us patients.

Hang in there & give this dr a chance. He may just surprise you. Keep us posted. Take care.

Sorry to hear you're having a tough time. First things first. Pain treatment is not easy. Primarily because it is 'subjective', meaning the doctors must listen to the subject/patient describe their pain and pain is different for everyone.

Diagnostic tests are usually ordered to determine 'objective' pain causes. For instance, an x-ray is taken so they can 'see' a broken bone (object). An M.R.I. so they can 'see' soft tissue injury. Physical therapy so that a trained professional can determine loss of range of motion, etc.

Once all of the information is acquired, the pain management doctor can then formulate a plan, usually using the 'least' medication necessary to achieve pain relief while also treating the cause of the pain. Casting a broken arm, surgical repair of a torn tendon, stretching tight muscles or ligaments, whatever the case may be.

What have you tried? What has helped? What hasn't helped? All of this information is necessary in order to come up with a plan.

If you are considered 'early' for a refill, what has caused your increased use of your present prescription? For instance, it usually takes me 3 months to go through 90 tablets of my medication. If my pain is worse and I find myself dosing more often, I go through those tablets quicker...why? So, my doctor orders a new M.R.I. and finds that my spinal condition has deteriorated. He first refills my prescription and then schedules me for facet joint injections. I get the injections and my usage drops dramatically.

As for being drug tested, that is a very common thing to occur for chronic pain patients. Don't take it personally. As long as you are not turning to street drugs or other substances to self medicate, it's just a matter of dotting the i's and crossing the t's for the doctors' records.

Around where I live they are no longer prescribing any opioids unless you have Stage 3-4 cancer. I'm now looking at having ECT to manage the horrific pain.

Back in better days, if I was having a rough month, I could call my PM to schedule an epidural. There really are very, very few docs that will refill meds (esp scheduled meds like Oxy) early. Even if you were seriously injured in a car accident, you'd likely just be told to continue your normal pain meds.

I'm so sorry you're going through such a rough patch right now. I think nearly everyone here can relate to flare-ups. They're awful while they last, but at least they don't last forever. Hang in there!

You are suppose to take your pain meds as they are prescribed. If your pain doctor knows you have been treated for drug addiction in the past, you are lucky he treats you at all.
