okay, i am not american, but i was interested in the post about
the possible use of ect for chronic pain. i spoke with my shrink the other day and asked the question, he is the clinical director of drug alcohol and mental health services for our state hospital, i do advovacy stuff and uni presentations for him. he has had talks with key stakeholders and says he has had information regarding it's use for chronic pain. he believes opiates are not the answer, however, ect is governed by the mental health act in each australian state, and is only usable as a mental health treatment at this time. he is aware of my pain and depression, i have considered maintenance ect, however the treatment is more fixed on the criteria of need, and thus i have not pushed this. but i would be
open to a trial, if it is considered for pain mgt in australia. my shrink is fully aware of the correlation of the deep ressive elements of chronic pain. i just thought that i would share that i am trying to keep abreast of correlative info for the members.

Thanks Turtle. Personally, e.c.t. scares the ____ out of me. The few people I know that had it, for various reasons, lost memories. At this point, I'll take the discomfort and pain, as long as I can have my memories!

There is a new (or at least new to me) treatment here that is similar to ECT, but uses magnets. Supposed to help with depression. It's been suggested to me since we've never found a med that treats my depression -- but VERY expensive. I was under the impression that it's new enough that no insurance covers it, and that results are iffy.
Now if I could remember the name, maybe it would be useful to someone. LOL

AH, yes, TMS! Thanks for helping fill in the holes in my brain!

Looks like this is also being investigated for some types of pain as well as depression.

I would NOT do ECT for anything. It's very harmful and doesn't help. There are new treatments for depression, pain, PTSD, bi-polar. They do low dose ketamine infusions and they have had great results. Do some research on the topic. ECT takes your memory away from you. Big chunks of my memory are missing. It has crippled me in many ways. Please rethink the ECT deal. My psychiatrist down played the memory issues.

i have done my research on ect, thank you very much. and ketamine. i am a mental health advocate and work within the psych and university system on such matters. for pain, i was exploring the issue that america is adopting. and please, no need for the caps either, it is considered shouting.
