The sciatic nerve passes through the deep muscular layers between the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius. Muscle tension and muscle shortening of the gluteal muscles can both cause referred pain.
Piraformis syndrome is another fairly frequent cause of hip pain and hip dysfunction. Its etiology is similar to the quandary of the gluteal muscles that I alluded to above. Shortening of the piraformis muscle, generally due to lack of physical activity and excessive sitting (sitting at work, sitting in driving, sitting at home), is a usual suspect in piraformis syndrome.
You can Google either of the above to see available stretches that you can perform to ease the symptomatology. Either way - if your symptoms begin to ease or if your symptoms remain - it gives you information to relay to your physician in helping to come to a differential diagnosis.
Without any other information from you, this is the best that I can propose.
Have you seen a physician or physical therapist for a consultation or assessment?
