I was just wondering how many people see a rheumatologist as well as a gi doctor.  I've been having joint pain, which is really scary to me since I'm still pretty young.  My job involves being active, and I want to have children someday.  I'm nervous about not being able to pick them up or play with them.  Is it helpful to have a rheumatologist?  What do they do?  Does anyone know any tricks to help out with joint pain?  Would a heating pad help?  I want to get a hold of my gi soon, since the pain is getting worse, but I want to be as well informed as possible first.

I think all Crohnies should see a Rheumatologist.  I have one and she has been very helpful.  In fact I have found out that my knee joints are worn like someone 15-20 years older than I am.  I think they can really help more than any other type of doc to get the joint pain under control.  Good luck.

What does your rheumatologist do? Does she give you medicine? Or exercises? Is there anything I can do on my own?  Thanks for replying!

I haven't been to a rheumy yet, but just wanted to say that for me tylenol arthristis medication has helped a ton. Regular tylenol is worthless when it comes to my joint pain. I think it would be a good idea to see a rheumy, but I thought that this might help for the time being. Good Luck,

My daughter will see a rheumatologist in March. I am also curious about what he can do. She has back pain and other pain. She has osteoporosis. I just cannot imagine what he can do to help the pain but I would like to be shown a lot that I do not know. The Tylenol Arthritis formula does not help her unfortunately.

Yup went to see one for the joint pain, he is the one that found the vitamin d deficit and he's gonna bone scan my spine for 2 reasons,

it hurts :)

and I have inflamation in my blood stream so he is being precautionary

and yeah I appreaciate my rheumatologist, it is nice to have doctors who trust you enough to take tests rather then just pass it off as Crohns and send you home.

Hi yes I see a Rheumy doctor. I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

Thanks for all your responses. I'll probably call a rheumatologist sometime soon. Did you all clear it with your GI first? Or did your GI refer you to someone? When I told my GI about my joint pain a few months ago she was just kind of like 'eh' which suprised me, because she's generally not like that. I'm not real big on taking more pills. Is that the general course of action a rhemy doc takes?

I see one and glade that I did because I found out that I have RA and OA.It is common for us Crohnies to have joint pain but if it get worse then by all means do see one.

I don't anymore, but my pain doctor is very trained in arthritis & related disorders. As I now also have Osteoarthritis as well as CD arthritis, its essential for me.
