Generic Asacol/Pentasa?

Does anyone know if Asacol/Pentasa come in a generic form yet? 

Also are they both the same only under a different name?

To my knowledge they aren't generic yet. I take Asacol and when I get refills its always Asacol and if a generic were available my insurance would have definetly already changed me to it.

And no they are not the same, only in the same family. One works higher up in your intestines and the other for the lower parts.

No generic on that medication yet.  Sorry. Asacol and Pentasa have the  same chemical structure. Reference: PDR Pocket Guide 7th Edition

Thanks for your replies.  Here's hoping they become generic sometime soon! 

So if one of them works up higher than the other one, can you possibly be put on both of them at the same time?

I've never heard of being on both at the same time. The Pentasa releases in the small intestine but then passes through the rest to the system. The asacol releases lower, I believe

Hi, I have been on Asacol for sometime now and there is no generic.

This weekend, I filled my Colozal and the pharmacist said the computer was showing that a generic will soon be available.   That surprised me since Colozal is newer than Asacol.  They've both worked for me in the past - just sometimes, the Asacol wasn't dissolving before it left my body, so my doc switched me to Colozal.  

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that a generic for Colozal will be in soon - the pharmacist said possibly next month!!!

Nope, but boy do I wish there was. It's $30 a month for me, which is better then if I didn't have insurance I know. But it's still painful when you've got other meds to buy!
