Nervous about bone scan

Hi everyone!

A quick question; has anyone had a bone scan? My doctor wants me to have one soon and I am quite nervous about it. I don't think that I am nervous about the actual scan, I have been through many different tests in the hospital before, but I am really nervous about the results. I take Caltrate, but am still worried...has anyone had one before and any helpful hints? Thanks!

Do you mean just a bone density scan? Unless you have been on alot of pred, the results should be fine. It is a very easy test....nothing to it, you just lay there. I get mine done in my rehum. office, so I get the results immediately.

Stop and think about this a minute! If you have bone loss requiring treatment better to know it now than later. If you don't have bone loss then you have a good baseline bone density scan to work w/in the future.

Actually anytime you've been on pred 3 months or more you should have a baseline bone density scan done regardless your age.

UNLESS, you are talking about the bone scan (NOT bone density scan) looking for suspected or possible fractures. THEN I could understand being worried about the possible results and WHY your doctor wants it done.

Even under those circumstances, better to know and act accordingly.

My density scan was clear, one more thing off my mind, looks like the pain from crohns really does radiate to other areas making Docs take the safe route and check those areas.

It is very smart to keep testing those areas, even if it comes out negative, I would wager to say most crohnies have multiple health issues,

They are doing a different kind of test on my spine now do to inflamtion in my blood stream and the pain in my spine, not to worried though, probably another red herring, but Id rather know for sure then not know :)

I had a bone density scan and was diagnosed with osteoporosis...and that was when I was 27! funny thing is I never took prednisone or any steroid, or anything that would have contributed to this. Docs said it was probably a result of crohn's and poor mineral absorption in my gut. I do have some other bone issues too though, (fibrous dysplasia in my left femoral neck) so it could be related to those, (which could also be related to Crohn's). Anyway, as others said, don't worry about the bone scan...completely painless and you'll have something lots of other people don't, a baseline test.

I was pleasantly surprised with the results of mine. I thought all of the pred and bad family history would mean bad results. I am now glad that I know things are okay. Even if the results aren't perfect, it can give you an idea of what to work on.

Hey Parischic!

I have had two bone density scans and out of all the tests I've had done related to Crohn's, this one's a breeze by a long shot...LOL.

I had taken steroids by pill, injection, and IV for 6 years before it affected my bones...2 fractures in hips, one in left knee, very painful. My Endocrinologist put me on IV Zometa and it is all healing nicely. I am a 35 yealold female and feel very grateful they found out early before I need a hip replacement.

My advice is to just try to look on the positive side...your Dr.'s sound like they are taking all the right precautions and are on top of things. And the sooner you find out, the sooner you can take charge of your health and take steps to get better.

Keep up the good fight and never give up hope!
