hello everyone.

I don't post often but do read the comments. They have been insightful and very helpful, thank you all.

I'm 33 yrs old and had Crohn's since I was 13. Rescetion when I was 16.

I have been put on Humira, went through the loading dose and now on the maintenance stage,

My question.

I have been icing down and taking the pen shots in the upper thigh.

Wondering where everyone takes their shot?

Do you think the stomach or the leg is easier

For me its a crap shoot.  Sometimes no pain at all, other times, it burns like hell, lol. last only a min though.

I always ice my leg for at least 20 minutes,bring the Humira to room temp and my husband gives it to me in my upper leg,on the side. I hate that burning,but icing does help. :-)

I do it in my leg. I wonder if tummy wouldn't hurt as bad (less muscle, HA HA!) but I'm scared to try! I've gotten used to my thigh and am afraid it'll hurt worse.

I, too, have no pain sometimes and the horrible pain the next time. So odd.

I found there was NO pain or bruising when I injected into the abdomen. While doing the loading does, I had two injections, one in each leg, plus two in the abdomen. Both thigh injections bruied a lot though there was no stinging. Therefore, I chose to always inject into the abdomen.

I ice3 down as well and it does help thats for sure,I switch up from time to time I do give my self the shot in my stomach as well.For me the stomach is better it does not hurt or sting as bad as it does when I inject in the thigh but the leg hurts the most for me.

I start my maintenance dose this friday, when I got the first four shots I aked for it in my stomach bc that's where I used to take my procrit and it was painless. HOWEVER, that was not the case for me with the humira, it was a killer. The nurse gave the second shot in my thigh and that hurt badly too. Not as much as the stomach but still enough for me to cry. When I gave myself the last two. I did them n the other thigh finding that a spot a little lower than where the nurse had injected was more tolerable.
Friday I will b sure to ice my leg and pray to the heavens that it doesn't hurt so badly. But I know now I can't bear the stomach, the nurse said mayb bc I didn't have enough fat there but I don't know

I found taking it in the abdomen was much less painful than the thigh

Abdomen is better for me with less pain and bruising. I do the shots, not the pens though, so I don't know if this makes a difference. I don't ice either. Sometimes the medication burns more than other times. But afterward, it's not at all like a normal shot in the arm, where it is sore. It doesn't hurt at all shortly afterward.

I've always taken the shots in the thigh - for whatever crazy reason I'm scared to try the injections in the stomach. I always ice my leg like crazy and leave the shots out of the fridge for about 30 minutes beforehand.

I started out icing the injection site first...and I also allowed the pens to warm up a bit....now I have found that I need to be sure the pens get to room temp fully (takes about 45 minutes) and I also do not pre-ice...it makes the skin tougher (IMO) and was causing more pain during the injection.  I take two injections every other week and now that I no longer pre-ice there is very little to no pain....if there is any discomfort I simply put an ice pad on after the shot and within a minute or less the discomfort is completely gone.

I rotate mine from each thigh to the stomach. I'd rather get them in my stomach for some reason. I had one in my thigh last night, but dumb me forgot to ice it first. It didn't feel too nice!

I tried icing my leg down before my shot, I also tried taking syringe out about 1/2 hour before shot hoping it would warm a little bit and not burn so bad...nothing worked for me. I take the shot in my thigh and it stings like crazy but the burn goes away as soon as shot is done, thank goodness.

I use four different sites - right and left abdomen, right and left thigh. I don't pre-ice, but I post-ice. The injections are painful, but only for a few seconds.

Thank you everyone for replying, it is always a great help coming to this site and thanks Curley for the welcome.
I take the next shot tonight :(, not looking forward to it but Its only once every 2 weeks, lol. I'm really tempted to try it in my stomach but I'll prob settle for the leg again. My wife enjoys giving me the shot, perhaps a little too much, lol.
