Hi, to be honest I though I'de post this here, to see if any could help. Last tuesday I became very sick, sore throat, congestion, swelled glands, and just overall felt sick. After seeing 2 different doctors, taking a mono test(negative), and a strep test(negative), it seemed no doctor knew what was wrong with me. My family doctor, 3rd doctor, who has a history of overreacting put me on steroids, which I contested since I have been on them before for my Crohn's with bad results, to reduce swelling and gave me another more extensive mono test. He said the results would be in by Sunday or Monday the latest. During this waiting period, with steroids, I became extremely better, I feel almost completely better. The only symptom I have is still some swelling around my throat glands. I can eat, workout, but still took it off work and going out until the results from the test came back. Of course, the test came back POSITIVE, I have mono. I'm 18, called the doctor explained my symptoms but he still thinks I have mono, tests don't lie. My girlfriend has never had mono, so I have no idea how I got this sickness. Should I pretend like I have mono for a week? Take it off work and life for another week? I find this ridiculous. This is a huge mess, I really was expecting a negative test result against mono but it always seems to work out like this.

You don't just get mono from a girlfriend (kissing). Mono is a virus that is contagious and most people can't pin down where they got it. You can have a mild case of mono with minor symptoms or be very sick with it. You want to avoid contact sports because it can damage your spleen. If you don't have a fever and feel ok,you can probably work, but you should listen to your body and take it easy if you need to. Keep in touch with your doctor, as he may want follow up blood tests, and to examine for swelling in your liver or spleen. I'm glad you don't feel that bad...maybe it will just be a mild case. If you don't believe that you really have mono you can always ask for an xray to see if your spleen is enlarged.

No fever, nothing. I feel great but at the same time I have mono. Weirdest thing, I don't feel sick but I am.

You don't feel sick because the steroids are suppressing your symptoms-you probably are contagious -if you overdo and don't rest enough you will be more likely to relapse. Take the week off, sleep a lot (if the steroids don't keep you awake) and let your body finish healling.

Steroids suppress symptoms? I was under the impression they were just their to reduce inflamation.

Bingo, smart people here......and great advice.  The steroids helped you feel better quick as the one physician started you on the steroid right away.
My son had mono at your age and he also had the strep throat too.  He was very ill and finally ended up in hospital with the IV for fluids and steroids. He missed his graduation party.  So I would believe that you have it and take care of yourself.
Check back with the Doc about your activity and your other concerns. Hope you stay feeling well.
