Immuran reaction and 6mp

I have been on immuran for 3 years now, no reaction and been fairly stable.  Recently i went to refill a script and found they changed manufacturers.  I took it that night and woke up with swollen eyes and now they are peeling.  My doctor switched me to 6mp and I havn't been feeling great since. 

Anyone else experience this? Also any info on 6mp would be helpful!

6-mp I was on for a while a few years ago and developed pancreatitis from it and was hospitalized.

They dropped that medicine really quick, now I am not allowed to take anything that is even remotely similar to 6-MP.

Sorry I dont know much more than that when it comes to this med.

What do you mean exactly when you say not feeling that great. What are your symptoms?

Well not feeling well as in major stomache aches for the first week, I think I'm getting better and going the bathroom less.  Also, I am on b12 now so I am not sure if that is giving me stomaches or not. I haven't taken b12 this weekend and feeling better, but I know I have to find someway to take it.  I'm so sick this.

Anyway, what do you mean when you say immuran turns into 6mp? The pharmist said it's two completly different drugs.

Are you sure you didn't get the generic version of imuran when that happened?

Immuran/Aziathiropine and 6MP are the same, but different. From what I understand they are absorbed at different places in the body. So it would make sense that one would work and not the other. Immuran worked for me, but not 6MP. I have Crohns in my terminal illieum area. My friend has Crohns higher up in the digestive tract and 6MP always worked better for her.

I have crohns in my small bowel, and yes I was on Azathronpine...which is a generic, however it worked for me. I have been on for 3 years until 2 weeks ago when the manuf. Went out of business. Do they still even make the real immuran if so , can anyone go to the bottle and find the manufactur for me ? That would be help maybe then I can fight with my doctor to put on that instead! It's like they give up and put you on the next best thing, but it makes me mad!

Whoa, hold the train, lol, sorry, was just browsing and came across this..

The original manufacturer of Imuran went out of business? So none of the Imuran out there is the same? I thought Imuran was Imuran (like generic stuff is the same)? Could the different types by different companies have a big difference in how they work? I only ask because i noticed that the shape of the pills i have been taking changed about 4 1/2 months ago (went from the dog bone shape to just a straight sided pill) and my flare started about 3 months ago and it almost seemed like it wasnt working anymore....any clue if this could somehow be related?

Yes, they still make imuran. I stopped taking it the end of Nov. Up until then they were still the dog bone shaped....I call them peanut shaped. I don't know who manufactures them, so I can't help there. My dr. wouldn't let me take the generic form of imuran.

Well I was on Azathropine and yes they were dog bone shaped, then change to a round flat pill, which gave me the reaction.

I have no idea, but I looked up the manf. of the pills I was taking and it was iipharma, they restructured. (aka chapter 11)

When the patent is up on drugs and generics are allowed, the FDA allows there to be margin of error in the actual make up of the drug where the active ingredient is concerned. So one generic may work better than another, which may not work as well as the original because they don't all use the same formula. Some generics have more or less of the actual active ingredients and more or less of the fillers. So we need to pay attention when our pharmacies tell us that they have changed suppliers and the pills have changed. It usually is that they got a better deal from one drug company over another. But often times it will mess up our systems and the way the drug works for us. This has happened to me with Birth Control pills more often than anyother type of meds, but I think it is true for all generics. Its just another case of buyer beware!!!

Wow, the FDA should really be more strict about quality control with our drugs.  It's pretty sad that it's ok to sell something as the equivalent of another medicine, when the "equivalent" doesn't work as well.  It should be printed in a big warning box that the generic medicines have a different formula or different inactive ingredients than the original patent medication.

On the subject of the bad reactions to the generic Imuran, anyone who gets defectively made generic Imuran or any other defectively made medicine in general can go here

to report it to the FDA.  There is no excuse for something like that and apparently the FDA takes it pretty seriously to get it gone or fixed.
