Flagyl again -- dose

I can't say how much I hate this stuff.  But, I know I need it because I've been running fevers 100 - 101.5.  I had my setons removed for the prochymal trial (requirement) and the opening has stayed open since, but I am scared it's closing and re-absceessing again. I could cry...  Well, I have cried!  ;-) 

I'm just wondering for those of you who have taken Flagyl...  maybe there are some other small people out there who can let me know their dose?  I wouldn't change mine without talking to the doc, but 500mg/3 times each day is making me so nauseous that I'm going to be lucky if I can keep it down!  Last summer my doctor (same one ) told me I should only be taking 2 per day (the surgeon prescribed 3).  I weigh just shy of 100 lbs..  Thanks, Shari

Hi Shari,
I am sorry you are not feeling well. If you are unhappy I would get a second opioion from another Gi doctor. It sounds like the Flagyl is making you sicker. With you only being only 100 lbs It sounds like to high of a dose. I am sending you a big hug.

Is there a chance they could switch you to cipro instead?

Flagyl is horrible stuff, isn't it? I can't take more than 400 mg / day without getting really sick.

My daughter weighs 116 lbs. and she takes 750 mg a day (250 mg-3x). Hope you are feeling better soon!

I am smaller than you.. around 90 lbs. I take 500mg 3x's a day. I have found that if I eat a meal and then take the pills the nausea is decreased considrably. After I take the pills, I usually have a few crackers to kill the taste. The metallic after taste is the worst for me. I usually suck on a hard candy, and that works for a while. I agree this is one of the worst medicines.

I had to take a round of Flagyl about 16 months ago for the first time since before 1984. I had forgotten how sick it made me. After only 2 doses, I quickly remembered. Years ago, I used to be able to get gelatin capsules OTC by asking the pharmacist to put the pills into. That helped a lot back then. This time, I simply cut the pills in 1/2, so instead of taking them 3 x day, I took it 6 times a day with a few crackers, like peanut butter and cheese crackers or a meal. I will have to say that worked really well with the nausea for me. The metallic after taste was AWFUL. I chewed gum, sucked on hard candy, and drank lots of fluids. But, it really worked for me.

Hang in there.. btw, I was only about 90 lbs when I had to take it 16 months ago.

I have taken 500mg 4 times a day. They actually wanted me to set my alarm and get up in the middle of the night to take that 4th dose. Make sure you eat with it.

s5599...during my 25+ yrs. w/ Crohn's, I was prescribed Flagyl 2x & it was pure misery. Are you aware that you can't eat any alcohol/vinegar based foods? This includes even simple items such as ketchup, mustard. One evening I was at a business dinner & stupidly forgot that the Oysters Rockerfeller had a wine base!!! Oh, I was hurling that night! Anyway, I finally took a stand & told my GI that I refused to take the drug...she prescribed Cipro from then on & it always worked (I even lowered the dosage as I do w/ the majority of my drugs...if they work at a lower dose, why not?). When hospitalized, I would receive intravenous Flagyl but, for some reason, it didn't make sick (I find that this is true of other drugs...probably because they're injected into the bloodstream as opposed to being ingested). You cannot drink alcohol but you can eat ketchup and mustard on flagyl.....I have been on flagyl numerous times.

I bought anti-nausea meds, but they don't really help. For some reason I thought I could go to the nursery and look at the pretty flowers (it's sunny and the nursery is close) but I ended up in their bathroom with both ends going. I just threw up the antinausea. He did say i could take either. Maybe when I call on Monday I will see if I can switch to Cipro... I hate that too, but it's not nearly as bad!!! Oh, and I do know about the alcohol thing, but thanks! if I didn't I would be hurting! I even avoid the listerine during Flagyl treatment.

My fever is still over 101, so I really think I need to be cut again for drainage. At this point I don't even care... (Well, I do, but...) I just want the vomiting, fevers and pain to stop!!!!
