I know Chrone's can be associated with autoimmune diseases. I have an HSV Type I for which I must stay on antiviral meds (Famvir) or it will break out within 10 days. Type I is supposed to be the easier, less virulent type. Does anyone else have this correlation? Could an immune problem that's not "autoimmune" be associated with Chrone's?

Hello Kishkes,

I'm glad to hear you caught a less virlulent type of Herpes virus! You can read many posts on this Forum about people with Crohn's who also have other autoimmune diseases like arthritis and allergies. While I haven't read anything that shows that autoimmune diseases make viruses worse, I guess its possible. Maybe others how know better will post!

I also have herpes but I am not sure what strain. I have had it for over 25 years and since I've had Crohns it has been flaring almost constantly. I am on very heavy doses of Aciclovir but this does not really seem to be helping at all. I am sure because it is another AI disease that it is much worse and resistant to treatment.

Most of the medicaitons for chrons suppress the immune system allowing any viral infections we harbor more prone to show up.
