Help. I cant think straight today. What is the thing about taking ibuprofen when you have crohn's? The doctor put me on 800 mg, 3 times a day for 3 days. I have some lower back pain. He did xrays and saw no arthritis. Thanks in advance for answering. Julie

Right before I was diagnosed I was put on 800mg of Ibuprofen and then 500mg of Naproxen. I had to be taken off both becuase they tore up my stomach something fierce. Now to help with the pain associated with arthritis I am on 400mg of Celebrex and I have not had any stomach issues. Again, this is just my personal experience but I can no longer tolerate Ibuprofen or Naproxen. Does you Dr. know about your Crohn's and does he/she seem ok with prescribing you the Ibuprofen?

I believe I was told it had to do with bleeding issues, I just remember my GI telling me NO nsaids Tylenol only for pain.

yes, he does know about the crohn's. he prescribed ibuprofen, hesitantly. and only for 3 days. Was it  very bad stomach pain you had, or was there an increase in diarrhea? Thanks, Julie

Ibuprofen has a risk of bleeding, but maybe it's ok for only 3 days

The effects of ibuprofen go further then one might realize...read this link...It can promote intestinal bleeding.

I wouldn't take that dose of Ibu for 3 days... I bleed regularly, but if I take 1 200 mg ibuprofen I consistenly see an increase in bleeding. I will still (against my better judgment) take one here and there, but never more than one and only when I have a headache that is bad enough that I know Tylenol won't help.

I would guess it really depends on the severity of your Crohn's. Is this your GI that advised the Ibuprofen? Or some other doc?

It was prescribed from the family doctor. I dont like the idea of taking it. I think I will try to tough it out without taking the ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen/Aleve/Asprin all are NSAID's which can cause stomach/intestinal bleeding which is why Crohn's patients should take them...at least not often. My feet swelled up so bad back in January that my GI put me on 6 regular asprin a day for 3 days. I didn't have any stomach/intestinal problems from taking it, although I was anxious about it. I guess it's different for everyone and why your GI should know whether or not you'd be OK with taking an NSAID for a short period of time. Some Crohnies have more bleeding than others so that might make a difference, too.

My family doc told me (long before I was diagnosed with Crohn's) that there is never a reason to take 800mg of ibuprofen. He said it wouldn't be any better than 600mg and it would cause more stomach problems.

I am having the same problem: lower back pain.  I am thinking of using topical external Ibuprofen cream instead of taking oral Ibuprofen tablets.  I wonder whether the Ibuprofen Cream will cause bleeding as Ibuprofen pills do.

I would call your GI.  I wouldn't take them.  If you have to, make sure you take them with food. 

I had some issues a while back and doc put me on Celebrex.  It helped a great deal.

My daughter takes Advil without any ill effects.  Bleeding has not been her problem and she only takes with full meals.  Usually its 600-800 mg at a time.

Hi,

before i was diagnosed with crohn's disease i was taking ibuprofen for the pain, but when the pains got worse i read the leaflet and it said that it can make bowel conditions like crohn's worse, or irritate your bowel, if you are getting bad pains and paracetamol doesnt work i would recommend codeine it works really well for me. :-)
