Asacol side effects

Hello.. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced terrible side effects with Asacol?

 

I was on Lialda for 9 months but had to switch to Asacol due to insurance change. After being on Asacol for a short time I was suddenly very fatigued and weak, having leg cramping and the worst joint pain in my knees I have ever felt. After 3 months of this, I took myself off Asacol (Big "no no" I know) But all side effects were gone once I was off it.

 

I have an appointment soon with my GI to go over what we are doing next and was just wondering what the next step was for others who could not tolerate Asacol.

BTW, I don't have an official DX but inflammation in the cecum. Colonoscopy last week showed a reduction in the inflammation by more than half, so I believe the mesalamine was working.

 After being on Asacol for 2 weeks, I awoke one morning and could BARELY walk, my knees and calves hurt so bad I could hardly walk across the room.  My dr. tool me off and I tried Imuran.  After 3 weeks on it, I felt like I had a horrible flu with high fevers-it was affecting my liver.  I am now on Humira injections1 every other week.  So far its been okay, but its not working as well as the loading dose did.  I don't know where I'll go from here if Humira doesn't work.  Good luck to you!

I have taken Asacol for years, but have had no side effects at all.

The only side affects that I can pinpoint to the Asacol, for me, were (are) hair loss and dry mouth. The rest of the potential side effects they warn of with Asacol are all symptoms with Crohns -- so who knows?! Good luck with finding the drug (or supplements!) that will work for you :)

I took Asacol and had the worst knee pain.I thought at first that maybe i blew my knee out because it hurt so bad.I even had the physical therapist at work wrap it.Then I started having extreme headaches and they ended up saying that my body couldn't break down the drug and I was basically overdosing on it.Once i was off of it long enough to leave my system everything got much better.

I was on Asacol from 2004-2008 and it kept me in remission until March of this year. I didn't have any symptoms or side effects.
