Just wondering what doctor you ask for pain meds, my g.i. acts like i shouldn't need any. Even when I am not flaring i still have some pain, does any one else? I start seeing a new family doctor next month and am wondering if thats the one I should ask.

i am fortunate enough that my gi prescribes mine. i am sure others will tell you how hard it is for them to get pain meds and usually have to see a rheumatologist. and i feel for you and everyone else in this predicament. i have had pain since march 2007. granted they have gotten better and i think i am still in flare, if that's possible. i mean, i still have urgent d a lot and still have a need to take pain meds. maybe call your gi and see what he/she says? and then if need be you can try your new doctor.

Look for a pain clinic, or pain specialist, your Primary doc, or maybe your g.i. should be able to give you a referral to one if the clinic needs it.

I have had great luck with them.

These are very regulated meds, many doctors simply will not mess with them, or they won't do it for very long.

Most docs are afraid of being taken advantage of. I am fortunate to have a doc that will prescribe what I need, but I am open about how I take them and how I don't want to up the dose and stuff like that.

Good luck, it can be difficult to get a doc that understands as I have read from many on this board.

My family doc prescribes all my pain meds. The only things my GI gives me are the antispasmotics such as Bentyl or Levsin.

My GI has always prescribed pain meds with me just asking, even over the phone. One of his nurses always tries to talk me out of it then says 'whatever' when she calls me back to say he called in a script! I don't know why some people seem to think that abdominal pain is ok to live with. A friend with similar digestive problems and pain complained about how her new GI and old one wouldn't prescribe pain meds. She said he doesn't want to talk about it when she asks what meds are good for pain. I suggested she ask straight out for medication. Sometimes doctors don't seem to want to start their patients on meds without the patient asking for it. Good luck, someone out there will help you, it just might take a while to find them!

There isn't a right answer to which doctor should prescribe the pain meds. Everyone's story seems a little different. Ask whichever doc will listen to you and support you with meds or whatever else you need to get throught the pain. My GI has given me Vicodan in the past. I no longer need it, but I then needed Xanax to help counter-act the prednisone when I was on it. I don't have a lot of medical issues besides my Crohn's, so I see my GI much more frequently than my primary care doc, but if your PCP is the one that will help you, then go with him/her. It took me a little while to get past the embarrassment of asking for pain meds, but with the help of this forum, I am much more assertive, and I believe I also get better care! My GI prescribes Ultram 100 mg ER for me. They are just right; not so much of a narcotic effect that I'm on cloud nine all the time, yet strong enough to really help the Crohn's related arthritis pain I have in my joints, and especially lower back. I take one before bed time to knock my back pain down enough to sleep. Celebrex and one Ultram = huge relief for me. It used to hurt to type. Now you guys can't get me to shut up. :)

Hi until today I didn't know that you could get pain meds for the pain because docs never suggested anything. i've had crhons for 7 years now and have never been in remission. Is there certain types that are better than others. I just became mom 2 months ago so its a lttle complicated.

In my experience, most GI's are against rxing pain meds ( other than anti-spasmodics). The older the GI, the more likely this will be true. If he will not, try to get a referal to a local pain clinic.

My GI preffers that I get my pain meds from my colorectal surgeon or my PCP especially since I need strong meds ie fentanyl patches or Dilaudid since my old GI had me on vicodin so much also have tried darvocet and percocet with no help

Be careful with pain meds. There have been times and certain ones the cause more pain than I was having. Tramadol is a good one for the gut. I have never had a problem asking.

But usually if I am in pain I don't ask as much as demand. Never ask a doc. on the first meeting though. They have to know you.

Also I have found that pain meds can cause fluid to build up. Compounds my joint pain. Not to mention swelling in the gut. I have had a lot more success with colon relaxer Donnatol[sp]. Really does a good job with galbladder or apedix area.
