how do you handle accidents while away from home?

hi all!

I have not been diagnosed with crohns (yet) and may or may not have it but I have had 2 accidents while away from home (in addition to one near miss in public and one accident at home).  I am so petrified to go anywhere in fear of this happening again.  I was wondering... how do people handle that?  The first time I was in my bathingsuit and luckily it did not go beyond that but my biggest fear is to have an accident and for it to be in public and my pants be entirely soiled.  How do you handle that? 

Also, are all meds for "d" prescription or do some over the counter work?

I just walk away or back away very quickly! Truth is if I have to be somewhere I plan for it. Cover all you'r bases.

I carry a much larger purse than I used to.

For the D you can use immodium. If I know I am going somewhere and there might now be a BR close, I will always use immodium. I don't know about others, but I can use it one day and be okay bowel wise the next. And know you are not alone with your fears, we all feel the same way. You will see a post today from PB4 where she said thank God she had a portopot in her van, because one of those times hit at her son's school. Try the immodium, its over the counter and works well. Hope you get some answers soon.

I found that I had D so bad that immodium didn't work, so my doctor gave me lomotil, and 2 of those pills will bind you up for a long time...... and I'm sorry you have had accidents I have not had that problem YET......

Take an emergency kit with you everywhere you go, extra undies, pads and wet-wipes are essential... if you read my post about my "potty van" you'll see that's another way that I cope when out and about...I also take a change of clothes and leave it in my van so if worse comes to worse I can change completely in the van, but in my purse I always carry wipes, pads and extra undies in a plastic bag so if I soild myself then I have the plastic bag to hold my soiled undies in.

yank them down and take care of business where ever..its not like you will ever see them again z :)


nah pb has some good ideas..its funny because just knowing you have backup really helps with actually thinking about going the the bathroom..half the time thats most of the problem ,thinking about it.

The van was huge for me to recover from the horrid anxiety I developed from the idea of having to leave the comfort of my home, then it eased my depression...often anxiety and depression can go hand in hand, especially when dealing with a chronic illness like IBD (or even IBS for many).

If I'm flaring, or having a bad day, I've been known to wear a depends diaper. It sucks, but my pride has long been lost. LOL It's been to have that extra bit of security. Or I'll carry one in my car, along with some extra clothes. Accidents are awful, and today I took my chances going out. I had to to though! I just got lucky that I got back home in time. But figured if it was going to happen it was going to happen. Just find some ways to prepare yourself.

I have a hard time leaving the house when I am flaring. This time has been extra bad. I feel very confined right now. I, too, have used rx Lomotil and it really does help much more than over the counter stuff. Jenn77 had great ideas. It is hard to swallow your pride but I guess we do what we have to do. I hope you get to feeling better and can find out what's wrong!

I plan my route out. I call ahead to find out where the bathrooms are where I am going. I try to drive it when I am feeling good and see where all the bathrooms are. I know every bathroom off every exit on my way to work. As soon as I get the urge I take the next exit. I don't try to hold it until I am there. I try to leave an extra half hour no matter where I have to be so that I can stop and poop in peace if I have to. I got comfortable with the idea of going in the woods and now I feel good about hiking again, etc. I live in the country so anywhere I drive involves at least 20 minutes through the woods. That is natures largest public bathroom. If it really freaks you out, try going in the woods for a non-emergency. Just show yourself that you can do it and no one will see you and you might feel better about having to do it if it comes to that. Sometimes I have a trash can w/ trash bags and toilet paper in my car just in case I get stuck in traffic or something and can't get off the high way. I still get anxiety when I am totally trapped. For example, I felt sick in a half hour car line at border patrol crossing at Niagra. I knew I couldn't get out and run for the woods. I could get shot!!! I also couldn't really use the trash can and have hubby pull up with me sitting on the can could I? But I went to therapy and learned some relaxation and distraction techniques and use those in the very rare situation where I am truly trapped. I am also vocal about by needs and always have an aisle seat just so I feel less trapped. I have been blessed not to have an accident in public but have come very close. I think having spare panties and maybe even pants is a good idea. Were you at the beach during your bathing suit accident? I would have just run right into the water. That wouldn't work in a pool though! I hope you find out the cause of your problem soon!

PS: there is a lady EvaLou who posts on the UC board and will go wherever whenever, trees or not. She hasn't been arrested yet lol! My therapist told me I should get a hoop skirt and then I could pop a squat whenever. I guess you could carry a small blanket or towel and cover yourself with that if you found yourself on the side of a road w/o woods.

Pb4 has great ideas. I do the exact same things. It takes a load off your mind knowing that you won't be totally embarassed if your far from home and have no supplies to clean yourself up. I find when I go to the nearest City and I'm having a really bad day I have 2 to 3 accidents, but it's the choice I've made to get out of the house to get errands done. Another thing that's really handy to have in your bag is those little concentrated air freshners. I know I'm always worried about the smell and it just eases my mind. Also a perianal water bottle helps for clean up and reduces the amount you are irritating the site from wiping. I have four :) One for traveling, one by the toilet at home, one in my diaper bag, and one in my purse. I stocked up when I had my baby a couple of months ago, because the nurses kept giving them to me in the hospital. LOL.
