Hello all...

Post surgery has anyone ever experienced problems with exploding diarrhea? How long should I expect it?? I am due to be released from the hospital tomorrow and wanted to know if I should expect this for weeks to come...Thanks.. Nicole...

Yes you will have some explosive D. It last for about 4-6 weeks for most and settle down once your newly reconnected bowel gets use to the difference. Some people continue to have D, but for most I think it settles down after a bit.

Hi cheergems, I was lucky and my explosive D stopped after about 1 week at home, so about 14 days post-op. The dietician suggested a little bit more salt each day, aged cheddar cheese (yum), saltine crackers, V8 go juice as snacks. I think it helped me alot, to snack a little on some of those suggestions each day. It will take some time to calm down so be really careful what you eat as everyone is so different. I wish you well and thinking of you.

I'm only 2 weeks post surgery and have been having the same issue with explosive D. Dr. wants to try colestid to help control it. Can't wait for this to end and hopefully have normal bowel movements for the first time since I can remember.

Wishing you the best. I just came home from the hospital yesterday after spending 2 weeks there. I'm still in a great deal of pain and need pain meds every 4-5 hours. I can't believe how long this bad pain is lasting. How's your pain?

The explosive D (ED) became a real issue for me when it had irritated my rectum so badly that I had excruciating pain with BMs. You might want to speak with your doctor about what you can do to slow things down before your discharge. After 8 days of the ED, I went to see my doctor. He recommended Imodium 1/2 hour before eating; eating 5-6 small meals/day (I never was able to handle more than 4); binding type foods (rice, toast, cheese; applesauce (haven't tried that yet); and Fibercon 1 pill 3x/day. I've been experimenting with the timing of food, imodium and fibercon to hopefully get some sort of routine so that I can return to work. I've been eating a lot of baked potatoes with yogurt and ground chicken; chicken noodle soup with lots of rice and even just rice and yoghurt. Also, ask you doctor about starting a Probiotic. I forgot to ask mine and still started taking one after I got home. Feel well!

Hi Nicole,
It`s been 7 days since my surgery and i still have the diarhea,having a colostomy sure helps out in that department.Still having minor pain.Am to see surgeon tomorrow to have my staples removed.Hope the big D ends for you soon.Take care,

Gosh guys, sounds rough to say the least. I take Kyo-Dophilus and it helps. I can only hope your symptoms subside. Take care of yourself!!!

I recently had 3 and a half feet of colon removed and I too had explosive D after surgery. I actually had accidents in my sleep and was completely mortified. It's been 6 weeks since my surgery and I'm not exploding anymore, but I'm still experiencing D. I was told it will get better over time. I'm sure it will get better for you as well.

Flem217.........I too had a large portion of my colon removed along with 1 1/2 feet of my small bowel. It's been 10 months since my surgery and I still have explosive diarrhea a lot of the time. My bowel movements are still very watery and are yellow in color quite often. The watery bowel movements burn a lot and my bum gets so sore sometimes. I haven't been following a diet as such mostly because I don't know where to start. There seems to be no consistency to what foods bother me. Some foods are ok one day and not the next. I realize that crohn's is an individualized disease when it comes to diet etc but I would appreciate any advice you could give and what works for you.

I am four months out from surgery to remove my terminal illeum and right colon and I'm still having all diarrhea.  Sometimes explosive and sometimes not.  It doesn't really seem to matter what I eat, I can just plan on several trips to the bathroom after every meal, usually starting about 20 minutes after I eat.  I do notice that anything with a high fat content makes things much worse!!  I plan my life around the bathroom still, which I was hoping would end with surgery but it didn't, BUT the pain in my gut is essentially gone.

Sometimes you'll have trouble absorbing bile after surgery as well. There is a medication called Questran, that can help soak it up. With all that bile in your system, otherwise, lots of D! I take it because I don't have a gallbladder and the over load of bile being dumped in to my system does the same thing. So if things don't settle down, it might be worth talking to your doctor about.
