At my 9 year old's recent dental appt, the dentist immediately noted a lot if inflammation of his gums (deep red and puffy). Upon cleaning my son's teeth, the dentist commented that the amount of plaque didn't seem to warrant the extent of inflammation. Does anyone know if this is due to Crohn's? My son is on Remicade (4th infusion due in a few weeks) or could it be from the Remicade? No sores exist past or present in or around his mouth though. Any thoughts?

Son, age 9, recent change in diagnosis from UC (from age 4) to now Crohn's as of 3/08. Colectomy with perm. ileostomy done 7/07 because of persistent, severe unresponsive "UC". Only med now is Remicade which keeps the horrible cramps and watery stoma output away, and has allowed his appetite and energy to return. I wonder though if the Crohn's is completely controlled.

Could be, since Crohn's can effect from the lips to the anus. I know others here have had ulcers and inflammation in their mouth. My lip swelled up from Crohn's, so yes it's very possible.

I have inflamation in my gums and mouth as well. Some mornings I have difficulty brushing my teeth because I am so sensitive. My uncle who also has Crohn's experiences gum inflamation as well. I thought I was crazy until my uncle reminded me that Crohn's can manifest in the mouth. "Sensitive toothpase" has been helpful. Hope your son feels better!

I have suffered from gum inflammation for a long time, even with ulcers in my mouth.  Sometimes my gums are swollen and red and even have red nodules on them, which didn't happen until the crohn's.

I've definitely had gum inflammation as well as mouth ulcers. Hurt to brush my teeth AND hurt to talk. Not much to do about it except rinse with some ULCER EASE and wait it out. Mine usually acts up when I'm in a flare.

Does anyone ever get a swollen throat? Like.. the gland in my throat on the right side just below my jawline swells out when I am in a UC flare.. right now its hard like a golf ball but not quite that big. People can notice it and often ask if my throat is sore. My Family DR had told me one time it was from my UC.. it made sense to me at the time because I noticed it only swelled when I had other symptoms at the same time. Only now.. it doesn't really make sense to me because UC shouldn't effect my throat right? Unless.... maybe I had crohns?? I am going to ask my GI about it on the 9th when I go in to see about this 3 month long flare !! I have also had inflammation in my gums for the last few years.. they bleed alot and my dentist had mentioned it but I just thought they were sensitive guns. Hmmm.

I have problems with my gums and my teeth have been breaking. the doc says it is due to my CD.

I've had pretty sore gums ever since I was diagnosed. I do my best to be very gentle when brushing and use the most mild of toothpastes.
The dental hygenist even said that if my mouth was really sore that I didn't HAVE to use toothpaste all of the time. Also recommended a toothpaste from "Kiss my Face" that is supposed to be really gentle, although I haven't tried that yet.

Thank you guys. I just knew it had to be CD related. I worry so much about the long term effects of CD on him. But I'm also very confident that better therapies are coming.
