Crohn's in your throat?

Have any of you experienced Crohn's in your throat? If so, what was it like? What are the symptoms?

Hi Justjenjen, I hope you don't mind, I edited your topic title to attract someone that might be able to answer your question. Sorry I don't know much about throat issues in Crohn's. . . . but reflux or erosion in the esophagus could sure cause some trouble. Blessings!

I'd imagine you could get ulcers in the throat. It can effect anywhere from the lips, mouth, throat, all the way down to the rectum. I've had it effect my lip (swelled up), but thankfully not my throat yet!

Hi, I'm new to this forum.  I have been recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and am in the process of testing for Crohn's disease.  I have been in a flare up since December 07 and progressively getting worse.  

This past week I got a really sore throat, ran a low-grade fever and then two days later started developing ulcers in my mouth and throat.  At first, I thought I had strep throat.  I went to the doctor who didn't think it was strep and sent me home with an antibiotic just in case.  My husband reminded me that Crohn's can affect you from the mouth to the anus and the light bulb went on.  I have been reading this forum for a couple of weeks now and remembered reading some of you had experienced mouth sores. I called my GI right away and he took a look and said yes, it could very well be another manifestation of the disease.  Well, I have been very stubborn about not taking the prednisone he prescribed for me two months ago.  I finally broke down this weekend and started it.  Two days later all my mouth sores and sore throat are gone.  I'm still waiting for all my other sympotoms to clear up and being able to eat something besides starches and bland food.  And, I'm still upset about having to take the prednisone!

So, my long round about answer is yes, Crohn's can be in your throat.

Yes, I've had it. It gets very hard to eat or drink anything. Not fun. I ended up on TPN because of it and my oesophagus has never been the same.

On the plus side, if you have CD in your throat and not in your rectum, you're at least able to get out of the house without running to the toilet every five minutes. At least, that was my experience anyway.

I have CD in my esophagus that doesn't give me problems very often but when it does it's like chest pains. Especially after eating or drinking something cold or hot, the only treatment I was given was steriods.

I also get "sore throats" that have yet to be confirmed as CD. By the time I get a doc to look, the inflamation has subsided or they can't see anything. I didn't have any of these issues while on Remicade, but had to quit it after developing antibodies. Now I'm only on Sulfasalazine which does nothing for my nonbowel symptoms.

My best advice as far as you diet goes is stay away from sugar and chocolate -- those are my worst triggers for the throat.

I have CD in my esophagus, as well as in my TI. I too am on sulfasalazine but am taking Pantoloc for the throat, esophagus problems. I've been out of it for the last couple of days, and boy, the pain has returned with a bang. I often get mouth and throat sores and the only thing that help those feel better are sucking on ice cubes.

Thank you for the answers. Did you just happen to ask your gi about your throat and that was how you KNEW it was crohn's? What I mean is--was the pain SO different from others things? I've had severe crohn's for over 15 years. Two years ago I had everything below my ilium (actually I think they took that too!) and I've been bagged and living in complete remission. However, the last few days I have pains in my esophagus and I just can't figure it out. It kinda feels like heartburn but I never get heartburn and it doesn't seem to matter what I eat or when I eat. I know that I can be a bit paranoid b/c pretty much nothing medicinally worked for me for my crohn's before the surgery.

Just before my Crohn's diagnosis, I had 103 degree fever that lasted for around three weeks and horrible ulcers on my tonsils. I was tested for mono and strep which were both negative, but my internist put me on three different rounds of antibiotics, because the infection looked so bad. It was horrible pain..I could barely swallow. I think the antibiotics were a mistake, because I moved from the throat ulcers to severe diarrhea, anemia, and eventually an ulcer in my small intestine and the Crohn's diagnosis. I really believe that it was Crohn's disease in my throat, but it didn't occur to my internal medicine doc because I didn't have a hx of Crohn's. I will now never take antibiotics unless I have a documented bacterial infection. I really believe antibiotics were making me worse and worse! I know that warm salt water helped a little, and I believe there is prescription meds you can get for the pain. If you run a search on this forum, there was a thread about this awhile ago.

Right before I was diagnosed I have ulcers all in my mouth and it hurt to eat or drink just about anything. When I was in the hospital and they took biopsy's ....they confirmed that I had crohn's all the way through my body. I had a extremely large active ulcer in the esophogus and it was causing the pain when swallowing. I am treating it with Carafate (it comes in liquic and pill) I am finally able to take the pill form........But during my last EGD my GI says the ulcer hasn't gotten any smaller, but it is currently not bleeding. Unfortunately I can no longer drink anything carbonated...it just hurts too much!

justjen, like Sherri, the oesophageal ulcers were my first presenting symptom, too. Not all of us "start" in the gut!

Searching can be hard. I usually go to Google, type "healingwell crohn's" and whatever it is I'm interested in, eg. "healingwell crohn's throat".

The pain in my esophagus was so bad I couldn't even swallow saliva. I got extremely dehydrated and kept going back to the ER where the would tell me it was just a flu, drink more fluids. Finally , my friend got so worried because at this point I was barely conscious, she brought me to a different hospital. They had me see a GI within minutes. I had an endoscope and he confirmed that I had a
"crater" , bleeding , in my esophagus, and that it was CD which had just moved on up. I was in hospital for 2 weeks .....
It really didn't feel like heartburn to me....just like someone had a knife and was twisting it inside my chest every time I tried to swallow.
P.s. I had mouth ulcers as well.
Good luck....hope this resolves quickly and that it isn't CD in your throat or esophagus.

The pain in my esophogus was so bad I could barely swallow before being diagnosed with Crohn's. Nexium helps. Then there's the mouth ulcers, your not alone.

It's important to get rehydrated ....if you are having trouble swallowing and are limiting your liquid intake be very careful. By the time I was finally admitted to hospital , the GI said I was only short days away from total kidney failure. That is after being turned away at another hospital time and again and told I just had the flu....and to drink more fluids.... Dah! that was the whole point...I couldn't drink !.

Today I'm better. I was totally nauseated over the weekend and everyone was convinced I'm pg. I just have no idea what the heck is up. I've had mouth ulcers before and I know how painful those can be so I don't think I have anything like that in my esophagus. I guess if I'm still having problems in 2 or 3 days I will take a pg test and if it's negative I will call my gastro. I just hate not having answers; plus I feel like an idiot b/c I'm not sure if I should call the doc or even which one!! Like I said though--today I'm better--I even ate!! Thank you all so much for your input!

There are so many reasons your throat could be hurting. Strep throat for one. Drainage from allergies? Severe acid reflux can definitely affect your esophagus, and cause nausea. I was on prilosec for a year and I no longer have problems with my acid reflux or my esophagus. That stuff really does work! (They found the Crohn's in my throat by tests and X-rays, don't ask me how. I just remember freaking out because you can remove your colon, but you can't exactly take out your esophagus or your stomach!)

hi,

i have mild to (sometimes) moderate crohn's.

it has mild for the last year or so. about three weeks ago i got a sore throat and just assumed it was strep. i have never had mouth ulcers - from crohn's or otherwise.

it occured to me that it might be the dx, so i went to my GI. he said i have a very large ulcer at the back of my throat, which he showed to me. he said it was more like a canker sore, then crohn's related. he said it would be unusual that i have crohn's sores without stomach pain.

about a week ago i started experiencing fatigue, followed by my typical crohn's pain.

long story short - it is possible that it IS or isn't crohn's. best to consult the pros.
