You are by FAR not the only one who ask for pain meds!! Either go see your primary care doc,, or try a pain
clinic. Try and keep your chin up....

Your doctor isn't the one experiencing the pain, I would like to see him have crohn's for a day then tell you that you don't need meds. I take percoset daily and have had severe pain since February. My doctor is very understanding and asks me how much I want or how much I think I need a day. I think you need to find a more understanding GI. for him to compare you to his other patients is wrong, everyone has different pain tolerances and everyone is affected by this disease differently. Don't let yourself suffer you deserve to be treated.

I have had two doctors over the years and both told me that they did not want to prescribe pain medication. The reason both gave was that if the pain becomes very bad, they want to see me right away. Just my two doctor's worth.

WOW yeah that doesn't sound right. My GI gave me meds for pain, although they really didn't do anything except give me D,
I'm going to ask for something different when I see him this week. But yeah he has no problem giving me something if I need
it. I would find a new GI.

You are not alone in this area. I posted here on the same topic sometime ago. Many GI docs for some unknown reason are like this, my last one included. Though I did not want to, I ended up seeing a pain management doctor. I took a copy of all my medical records in with me to that she would have a very good understanding of what I am going through. Pain is no good. Very difficult to hold down a full-time job and be in so much pain during a flare.
Good luck to you.
PS: Request a copy of all your medical records from GI and from any hospitals that you have been in, including ER visits, for your own records. Always a good thing to keep a copy for yourself.

I have heard quite often that many GI's are notorious for not prescribing pain meds. I personally get all my pain medication from my primary care doctor. I think the GI's get concerned that the pain meds may mask symptoms or could cause your bowel to slow down. Still doesn't help when you are suffering so much.
With my health plan we do need a referral to pain mgmt docs. I would talk with your family doc and ask if he will prescribe pain meds, and if he won't, then ask for a referral to a pain mgmt doc. Good luck!

I think you may do. Get that from your primary care if you have one.
One thing more, I know you are in pain, and you do need pain management. But I also think your GI also needs to look
into some different treatment regime for you. It seems to me that 40mg of pred is not cutting it anymore. Has he spoken to
you about
remicade or Humira, for instance. Pain is an indication that something is wrong, and that needs to be addressed...
I hope you get the help you need hun....

take care :)

Well, just saw my new GI, older gent who was highly recommended. I was waiting to see what he would say about
pain management - yep, very much against narcotics. Says they are bad. I politely said stop the pain, as I would love nothing more than to have to take the darn things. He looked at me funny then ordered some sort of blood test that I hadn't heard of and then a small bowel CT scan that they only have at Presby Dallas, again, that I haven't heard of. Then he told me he would try some crohn's meds the other doc hadn't tried Remicaid to start and Immurun (can't spell meds well!). I smiled and said thanks, held up both hands lifted one and said pain, lowered that one lifted the other and said no pain then waived the no-pain hand and said I will take the no pain along with pain meds, thank you very much. At least I got a laugh out of him but am down to five pain pills and 6 nausea pills and no medications prescribed from him yet - dread creeping into my thoughts. The nausea is almost as bad as pain too, ya know - ESPECIALLY at work!
Decided that GI docs are anti-pain people. If only there was a perm remission cure... then the hell with pills!!
Ya know who really peeve me? Pill seekers! If people didn't do that, then us folks who actually have need wouldn't be in this pickle.
Take care all,
-Leslie
