I was told yesterday after my colonoscopy that I probably needed to have a resection done.  I have infamation that is not responding to meds. and segnificant scar tissue.  I was a little overwhelmed with this information.  I didn't expect my doctor to talk surgery.

For those of you who have had a resection can you give me some info about hospital stay, time out of work, pain, recovery, etc. 

I am a little lost in all of this, I can't find any "real life" talk about a resection, only medical talk.

Hi Welcome to Healing Well . I had the same problem in Jan. of not responding to meds. Surgery wasn't too bad I did not have much pain because of the epidermal which keep me very comfortable for three days after that I only needed one tylenol.In hospital 6 or 7 days,It took me a bit of time to get my strength back as I was very sick for about 5 or 6 weeks prior to surgery. I hope you do great and please don't stress the days go by fast and I have improved health now. Keep in touch we"re here for you. lol gail

Hi there sorry you are going to have to have surgery, my 3rd may be on it's way in the fall time if Humira doesnt work I have a GI appt tomorrow.

Alot of surgery depends on how bad your infected, my first one I was alot younger 32yrs old, and was slimmer, in shape and terribly sick.  I was in a week prior with cipro and flagyl IV's to calm down the infection and a week after.  I had a small incision and I guess taking it easy I was getting back to normal in about 6 weeks with Entocort.  Depends on your surgeon, you healing time.  What type of job do you do for a living?  When is your resection?? Keep us informed, hope you are not stressing out too much, I know it sucks but think of how much better you are going to feel!

I had a similar situation and had a resection in 2004. The surgery and recovery were not horrible. With pain meds and good friends, I made it through just fine.I was out of work for about 6-8 weeks.

I am having my first true flare-up since surgery right now, so I have enjoyed the last 4 years without any major crohn's issues (besides having a "bad day" here and there).

Hi,
I had my first resection on May 1st this year.I had been on a liqud diet for 6 weeks prior to the surgery as I was almost completely blocked in the terminal ileum.

Surgery was much easier than I had anticipated,its always scary but I think our imagination can do quite a number on us.I was in the hospital 5 days and was uncomfortable with the staples, but they were removed 3 days after discharge and I went back to work the same day.The only negative postop has been diarhea which hopefully will clear up in the future.It sure is nice to eat solid food and I would jump at the chance to do it all over again.

You will do just fine any worry is needless.take care.

Bradlaugh-Did you have Laproscipic (sp?) or did they cut you wide open?

Hi, I had a resection about 3 weeks ago and now I must say that I feel GOOOOOD!!!! And I have not been able to say that for a while. Since Nov 07 I have been suffering but my doc insisted that I will get better and that the meds will work....they never did!!!

So he suggested that I have a resection to remove. I was at first really scared as im only 24 and this is my 3rd op.
My advice to you is not to worry...just think that after this you will feel ok once recovered and then look after your diet and hopefully our crohns will not return.

Hi, I think you have gotten some helpful replies already and only wanted to add from my own experience (dont forget we are all different)
After your resection take the pain meds offered as that helps you get up and moving quickier.
When you do get out of bed, hold a pillow over your belly for support.
I did all this and lots of walking around the hospital wards/grounds.
My surgeon was impressed with my recovery and I got to leave hospital after 4 days, was back to work after 6 weeks.

my resection was quite dramatic for me,i was very sick before i had it and i got a bloackage after my surgery so i vomited tons for 3 days until they figured wat was wrong,mine was lapriscopic assisted but the bit was too big to fir out a small hole so they opened me up,i had a temp illeostomy for 2months which was ok,my crohns isnt under contoll yet and im booked in for another scope if i dnt get any better in a couple of weeks,so yeah surgery is easy getting ur crohns under controll seems to be the hard bit

Hi,
In answer to your question my surgery was an open incision,actually he cut through a previous scar from 3 years ago when my colon ruptured.You will be quite happy later on after the surgery when you see the benefits from it.
