really painful endoscopy

hi all, I just had my endoscopy on Thursday. I wasn't at all worried because the last endo I had, I was totally put out and only remember waking up and asking if the dr. would be in soon, only to be told that everything was over all ready. Not so easy this time.
They gave me sedation, and a narcotic to help with the pain, sprayed the back of my throat and then told me to swallow , what looked like to me to be a GARDEN HOSE... yikes... I had a terrible time swallowing the thing...and it hurt like the dickens every inch of the way. I thought my chest was going to explode.

My GI said that he saw a lot of scarring and some inflammation, but felt that my Pantaloc was taking good care of it overall...didn't think that was the source of my 3 day bleed a few weeks ago. He also said the constant pain I have in my left upper quadrant is likely from my colon.

So now I have a colonoscopy scheduled for July 10th. Can't say I'm looking forward to it.

Hi Marie, I had mine done 15 years ago, and it was the only way after 8 months of tests to get my Dx. Well, when the specialist said I had to go for an xray, he never told me what kind and I left too chicken, he called me later and said it is crucial for dx. Well they froze my throat, I dont recall them giving me anything, for me to be calm! I choked on the spray when they initially froze it, and then they put the tube down my nose and it was hurting! I couldnt breathe and I spewed in the technologists face, and they were trying to get me to say my name cause I was not able to swallow or breathe . Well lo and behold somehow it went into my lungs and had to pull it out and do it all over again!!! In my head I was screaming, and I wanted to pull it out, but the only thing that kept me from doing that is I saw the screen and watch them shoot the barium through. It was very loopy and many strictures. Some docs put you out, some dont. The moral of the story that was my ticket to my answers of suspicious Crohns. What a nightmare! And, hopefully never again.

I recently had one done and the doctor asked me light, medium or heavy - I told him I don't want to feel anything and that's the last thing I remember before waking up in recovery!

I've had what they call a small bowel enema where they thread the line through the nose and down the esophagus and through the stomach to the small bowel where they then introduce the barium. There they didn't use any sedation at all and it was quite unpleasant - and I too spewed all over the technicians

The first time I had this procedure done I had an upper endoscopy; Becuase of my poor interaction with benzodiazepiens (the drug used to sedate patients and cause an amnesia of the procedure) I had to go through it cold turkey. They sprayed my throat with lidocaine but that did virtually nothing, and they gave me a mild tranq so I would feel sleepy. It took me five tries to swallow the whole thing and it had to be the most painful experience ever, the procedure was about 7 minutes but it felt so so much longer, I gagged a few times through it and when they were finally done the camera came out followed by some lovely stomach fluids. I remember leaving the hospital saying that I would rather just suffer then ever have that done again, it was probably the worst experience of my life. A couple weeks ago I had a upper endoscopy and colonoscopy back to back (no punn intended) with a GI specialist who is renowned in Ontario, beacuse of the experience I had last time I told him to just drug me and I would worry about the drugs effects later, I went in and just remember saying to the med student 'dont let me throw up in my dreads, that would be a ***** to get out' she chuckled and I remember the doc putting something into my iv and then I woke up a few hours later in the room I started in. Unlike most I was aware of what had taken place but I had no memory of the actual procedure except for a few brief moments of severe sharp pain that I remember cringing at. It was like a walk in the park. So the can really go either way, my advice is to take the drugs, and if they dont offer any ASK!

I've had two, always been put completely under, what happened to you sounds sadistic!  maybe verify that your insurance will pay for it, I think they used propofol, but the trick is, you HAVE to have an anesthesiologist present, it shouldn't be done by the GI or a nurse and some plans won't pay!  good luck!

Wow, that is awful! I am very lucky my GI is good at the scopes (both ends) My endo did not hurt at all. I am so sorry you had pain!!! Karen
