I have various hip-related diagnoses ranging from bursitis to inflammatory arthritis to osteoarthritis, etc etc etc. I'm not sure what's causing it, but my hips are starting to hurt whenever I stand up now, and that sets my lower back off, and it's very annoying and is slowing me down a bit.
I'm seeing a rheumatologist and I'm already on Humira. I eat fish several times a week and am experimenting with other anti-inflammatory foods like ginger. Have tried fish oil capsules and been taken off them due to lack of response.
Is there anything else I can do to help the hips? Any postures or exercises that might help?
Thanks,
I.

Well, I have the same issues. I take Cymbalta which seems to help. It was really bad, now I just occasionally toss and turn to try and get comfy. I too take Humira

I have a mystery hip pain--how did you come about
your diagnosis? What kind of tests? I've had an MRI which showed nothing. Sorry, if this seem nosy but I'm sick of the pain.

The only time I have ever had a sore hip was when I had an abcess in my abdomen or somewhere there about
s.
For some reason, whenever I start prednisone at first my legs and stuff fell all wierd and weak like im brittle and might break, roll my ankle or something, but it always goes away after im on it for a bit. I have never asked the doc whats up with this : )

Heat pads, hot shower and walking are the only things that help me at the moment. Sorry you are having this trouble too Ivy. Jo

I would recommend physical therapy. I had pretty bad lower back and hip pain but since completing physical therapy my hip only acts up a little when my bowels are acting up. I feel that physical therapy was extremely helpful for me and they gave me the tools ( exercises) to better deal with the pain when my hip does start to act up.

Hi Ivy - I'm sorry to hear you're having hip pain that's so intense. How long has it been going on for? Do you have pain in other joints? I agree with Gracie Girl that physical therapy might benefit you. Some of the modalities they use are very effective on relieving pain, and the exercises they recommend really do help. I did nerve damage to my shoulder and had terible pain. They were able to strengthen my muscles that were not damaged and gave me back mobility. I've been mostly pain free as a result of a long spell of intensive physio. I also was prescribed a tens/muscle stimulatar machine for home use, which relieved pain and added strength while undergoing rehab and any time I need it now for the odd flare.
Wishing you the best,
Bev

ivy6,
Hi. I've been having that same problem. They don't always stay on so well and you might want to reinforce it with medical tape, but Lidocaine patches sometimes help my hips when I can't sleep from the pain. I've tried stretching and all of the other stuff but sometimes the pain really seems to be coming from deep in the bones. I know it's hard to deal with sometimes. Hang in there.

Thanks, all. That's really encouraging. I thought that, since I was on Humira, there wouldn't be any other medicines to help with the pain, so it's good to know that there are things like Lidocaine and Cymbalta.
Gail, I'll try the pillows, thanks.
Unfortunately, I may have to wait until next year to get physio for the hips. I only get six sessions a year, and this year's sessions are being used to deal with the Achilles tendon problems.
Jen, they diagnosed my problems through x-rays and MRIs conducted over a number of years.
I think I may be developing another illness. I feel stiff, and my finger joints were starting to feel quite tender last night - I suspect that is not a good thing.
Two more weeks until I get to see the rheumy!
Thanks again,
I.

I think that the joint problems are from Crohn's. There is a known effect that inflammation in one area can trigger damage in a quite different place (mast cells seem to talk to each other). It may not help you, but if you can control your Crohn's, you may have relief for your hip pain. Your mention of stiffening in other joints tends to support the idea. Have you tried the specific carbohydrate diet? There is also a good synopsis of alternative treatments in a book called "Listen to your Gut" (Jini Patel Thompson), but it is a bit vague on the diet. I personally don't think that the medical approach can do more than control symptoms. I don't want to suggest that you drop the treatment that you are on, just add some other things. The main tool in my view is diet. I like the specific carbohydrate diet because it starts with no carbs and no fiber. You cannot keep on with that, but it is necessary to start with because it should stop the inflammation. You can do the same thing with fasting (just water - NO juice), but most people can't keep to that very long. The SCD diet then limits the carbs while gradually introducing some fiber foods. This helps prevent the inflammation from being revived - although you have to monitor yourself for tolerance for new foods being added (fiber can feed the inflammation as well as carbs).

Ivy,
I remember you saying you had AS ,right? all of your symptoms sound like AS to me as I have it too.
Getting your hips resurfaced or replaced will make all that pain go away. I had mine done. Dont wait too long you wind up doing more damage to your gut from meds and back from walking wrong.
