Quick question for anyone is or was pregnant with Crohn's

Goodmorning everyone!!!! I was at my OBGYN the other day, just for checkup and my Dr. and I got talking about my Crohn's and she said "Now are you and your husband done having kids or no"? (We have 3 kids) and I said that we were done and she said ok thats good, because with Crohn's and pregnancy you would have to get a C-section...Now that I'm thinking of it why would that be, why can't you have a vaginal delivery with Crohn's....

Don't know why your ob would say that. I delivered two boys and boy /girl twins vaginally with out any trouble. I was in remission with all the deliveries. My ob or gi never suggested a c section with me due to my crohns.

Im sure your doctor would have an explanation or maybe you have crohns complications that would require a c section. My crohns is only in the large intestine and I have never had any surgerys.

I had a C section with both of my daughters. But the first one was because of complications during delivery and was emergency and was before I was Dx. The second one was a planned C and sure enough I would have had the same complication with her, but it wasn't related to my Crohn's. I can't see any reason why your doctor would have said that. Is it a different doctor than the one that delivered your 3 kids? Maybe just their standard operating procedure?

I had 3 children all after my diagnosis.  I had two vaginally and 1 C-Section.  The only reason I had a C-Section was because she wasn't in the right position.  The called it sunny side up when I had her 29 years ago. (eek)

Thanks everyone....she didnt say a reason why it would be that way..she delivered all 3 of my kids (no c-section) and Im not high risk, only health problem other than crohn's is my asthma... she just said that her crohn's patients all get c-sections..just curious as to the reason behind it....

I had my daughter completely natural - no drugs (no time) and that was after I had surgery.

I am currently 34 weeks pregnant with my second daughter. I had crohn's but wasn't diagnosed when my first daughter was born, but I had her naturally without complication. After reading some posts on here about women having to have c-sections while on remicade, I talked to my OB about it and he said every case is different. There are no studies showing that remicade can stop the ability of the cervix to dialate, but some drs might assume that is the reason that labor doesn't progress in a patient with crohn's and on remicade. He did tell me that at 35 weeks they'll start checking my cervix weekly and if there is any kind of change (softening, thinning, ect) then he sees no reason why I wouldn't be able to deliver naturally again. I have been pretty nervous about having a c-section, taking care of a newborn and a 3 year old and a possible flare (after delivery is highest risk of flare for most)...but he has definitely put my mind at ease.

My friend went hiking 10 days after her C-section, with her newborn. They don't always involve long recoveries.

I had my first child 16 years ago...also ended up with a resection, appendectimy, not to mention the emergency c-section, but at the time my crohn's was severe(note the resection), but then I had my daughter 2 yrs later, I had her vaginally (VBAC) with no complications. I think it depends on severity of d and meds.

I had my son 2 1/2 years ago and had to have a c-section but only because he was a big boy (over 9lbs) and doc said
there was no way he was coming out of there any other way. LOL I was also going past my due date.

I had all four of my children vaginally, while having CD. Like Sally I was in remission during the pregnancies too. Cant understand why the Doc said this to you either. Jo

I had my 2 boys vaginally but was before my diagnosis.  I would think there would be no problem. it almost seems that a C Section might have more problems cause some of us Chronies take longer to heal. I always have. Maybe your Gi thinks that a C section would be best for you so not to put pressure on your gut with all that pushing you do for a vaginal delivery. who knows? Karen

It is suppose to make an already compromised sphincter muscle worse (especially if episotomy) when giving birth vaginally. However, if you do not already have poor bowel control it should not be an issue.

Is your Dr maybe thinking of a tubal? Maybe she figures get two things done at once, but I think she should have helped ease your worries. I had a c-section, but I wasn't DX with Crohn's until after my pregnancy. GI, obgyn, and FP figure pregnancy sparked it. My c-section was because I wouldn't dilate after 6. My son didn't want to come out. I remember the obgyn telling him to "Come here you, oh, no you don't" later he told me my son had slipped back in, and he had to go back in to get him. He was snug, he didn't feel like coming out yet. :) I had other minor complications such as hypertension and two months with no more than 1-2 hours of sleep a night. I was so exhausted that when I agreed to do "Neubain" (not sure of the spelling) I fell asleep almost immediately and even dilated in my sleep. The nurse said she had never seen that before.




I hope your baby is happy and healthy. I hope your baby is as easy to take care of as mine was when I first brought him home. smurf smurf

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP WITH THIS, AGAIN IM NOT SURE WHY MY OBGYN SAID WHAT SHE SAID, MY FRIEND ALSO HAS CROHNS AND HAS NO CHILDREN SO WHEN I TOLD HER WHAT MY DR SAID IT WORRIED HER THAT SHE WAS ALMOST GURANTEED A C-SECTION....AGAIN THANKS FOR THE INFO....

I had an elective C sec 2/06 and I will have another one with this baby ( due in March!!!). My OB suggested it when we were discussing my CD. He always suggests it for CD patients. Vaginal delivery can cause major stress in that area and in turn fistulas can form. If you are prone to fistulas, abscesses etc a c-section maybe something you want to consider. Yes, it is major surgery...however, I thought the good outweighed the bad in this situation. I know I didn't want to take the chance to developing anything horrible in that area...been there done that and w/ a new baby I wanted to prevent it any way I could. My c sec was an amazing experience. Not that painful and I felt great during the whole pregnancy and for a good while after. I hope it is the same with this one!!! HTH

I'm due next week, and I haven't been told anything like this. We are all planning for a natural (no meds) vaginal delivery if this little girl cooperates (cross your fingers it is not until next week because I am going out of state for a funeral today).

I have heard other recommendations depending on your past symptoms-- previous abdominal surgery or fistulas can make a difference. I haven't had either, so that may be why we are assuming I have no different risk for a c-sec than anyone else.
