hi im kiansmum,i got diagnosed with crohnes in oct 07(not a nice situation).

i was just wondering if anyone like me has crohnes running in the family?my twin brother was diagnosed 15 years ago,which in a way made it easier for me(well sort of).

doctors thought i had prolasped heameroids,this went painfully on for weeks till i landed in hospital.it was me that suggested to test for crohnes because of my brothers hysory .

As far as crohn's running in families... the official statistic that I always see Kiansmum, is that 20% of crohn's patients have a first degree relative with some form of irritable bowel disease (either crohn's or ulcerative colitis).

Personally, my maternal grandfather is the only one in the family that I can point a finger at, and he didn't even have an official IBD diagnosis. He had diverticulitis, and diverticulosis, and polyps, and everything else miserable under the sun, so I've always just wondered if they "missed" the proper diagnosis. Both of my brothers have "IBS", but my parents have "IRON" stomachs - I swear, NOTHING phases them - so it's weird that all three of their kids have belly trouble!

I am the only known one in my family who has Crohns. My mom said my Dad's mom and sister had stomach problems all the time, but Crohns wasn't really known that much in those times.

I am the only one in my blood family with Crohn's. My dad's sister has UC and my dad's sister's son has UC.

I know a 20-something woman diagnosed with severe CD when she was 18. She is a twin and her twin does NOT have the disease.

My husband was diagnosed June 06, and since he was adopted as an infant we don't know about history, but two of our four children have had bowel "issues". This makes me concerned for their future.

We are in the process of trying to switch the family over to SCDiet, and maybe that will help put off what may come for a little while longer.

My first cousin was just diagnoced with UC. She's 18, poor kid.

I have had CD for 22 years and my niece was also diagnosed at 12! Yuk- poor thing. she was such a sick little girl.  They found hers because her knees were so swollen.  No pain or anything.  She is now on Remicade and doing really well.  I also know of a couple distant relatives who also had stomach problems but never diagnosed with CD, but as was mentioned , back then they figured it was so many other ailments.

You mean have a first degree releative with some form of inflammatory bowel disease not irritable bowel disease...and it's 20% known family members, that doesn't mean the number isn't higher that's why Canada is doing the GEM study (check out the CCFC website) monitoring siblings/family members of IBDers, of which the family members do not yet show signs of either CD or UC...

For the record, I have crohn's and my mom has UC which she did not get sick with until her mid 60's and I got sick before her in my early 20's...so it just goes to show that many more than what might be suspected may have family members that are predisposed to getting IBD but theirs just hasn't been triggered yet, be it a parent or even a grandparent.

I was told by my doctor that it isn't just a matter of whether or not someone in your family has Crohn's. It's been linked with other autoimmune disorders as well. If there are people in your family with Rheumatoid Arthritis for instance then the occurrence of Crohn's is still more likely. There is some sort of correlation with all of them, but of course there is no definitive answer.

there are specific genes linked to IBD specifically, that's why the GEM project is going on, to monitor crohnies family members to see which of them will develop CD or even UC.

Believe me I know..the genetics factor is one thing I find extremely interesting, but judging from a simple glance at links within the family, notwithstanding genetics but at a glance, there are ways to trace the probability in people such as taking a closer look at other disorders present in in the bloodline..which I find rather scary. Crohn's within my family has only manifested itself in me. Other members of my family have things like arthritis or diverticulitis however. Just something I like to think about and thought I would share it in the first place.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's when I was 29 years old.  My brother was diagnosed when he was 12.  Our sister, thankfully, doesn't have it.  She's now 44 years old, so hopefullly she won't ever have it.  My brother and I are the only two in our family that we know of that have any autoimmune issues.

My older brother (now deceased) had UC.  My younger brother has Chrohns.  I also have Chrohns.  My poor parents had to deal with all their children suffering from IBD. shakehead

I am the only one in my family with Crohn's Disease. HOWEVER, all of my siblings have diarrhea much more than is common. My mother gets diarrhea a lot and my father has had ulcers in his stomach (most likely not Crohn's) but also has diarrhea quite a bit. (Sadly yes, most of us DO sit around and discuss our poo and stomach issues).

On both my father's and my mother's side, Rheumatoid Arthritis is VERY common. Also, my grandmother had Anklosing Spondalytis (forgive me if my spelling is off).

pb4, I would be very interested in reading the results when the GEM project publishes them. If you can post the link at that time, that would be great!!

I got diagnosed in May of this year and I am 24, My sister has had Crohns since she was 23-24. She is 31 now. I find it oddly comforting to have someone who understands everything that you are going through when the rest of the world has no idea the panic and pain we go through. I can talk to her about the different meds we are trying. She is currently on Asocol, She was one of the first 100 patients to try Remicade. It worked for her for a while and she is not in remission. So far I have only tried Prednisone for immediate relief and I am currently on Lialda and hopeful.

I have CD, My Mom had CD, her cousin has CD, the cousin's son has UC and their Uncle had what was then called Tuberculosis of the intestines, this was before Crohn's was discovered.  Then about 3 years ago, My Dad was diagnosed with AS, so basically I hit the genetic jackpot as far as autoimmune diseases go.  I'm watching my two daughters like a hawk.

And my older daughter was serious with one guy who was just diagnosed with IBD, at this point the doctor isn't sure if its UC or CD.  I'm still hoping they don't get back together.  He's a sweetheart and treated her like a queen, but oh lord, the genetic pool those kids would be swimming in!!!

On the other side of that coin, how much moreso they would be such strength and encouragment for each other during the "storms".
If he already treated her like a queen, if the genetic pool "caught up with her", he would be beautiful to her!

Just a thought I had to share...some couples don't do well even though they vowed "in sickness and in health" (sigh)

My Husband has had Crohn's since the 70's, and 3 operations for it. Our Son also has Crohn's but has had no surgery. His Son is 21, and now experiencing the symptoms of it, but not diagnosed as yet.
We believe my husband's Mother also had Crohn's but there wasn't a name for it at that time, they called it a twisted bowel & she had surgery a couple of times also. ~Sande~

I have three sisters and one brother, My older sisiter has UC, my brother and I have Crohns my youngest sister is in the process of finding out if hers is CD or UC. That makes 4 out of 5 siblings that have been diagnosed. We are the only known ones in our family tree that have been plagued by this horrible disease.

hi... new too... i have had crohns since i was 17(53 now) and my daughter was dx at 16.. with her though a round of steroids etc cleared it up.. she's 36 now and never had anymore problems.. i had 16 major surgeries up until i was 35 and now have short bowel syndrome. we do have a lot of auto immune disease in our family as well.
