Help. I have been fighting dehydration for over 2 wks now.. i hate going to the er- i have been drinking vitamin water and regular water and orange juice. I have had intermittent diarrhea and night fevers and I cant seem to replenish. I tried to workout thursday nite as i thought i was hydrated and i couldnt do it- my heart rate was way up in the danger zone. I have noticed that my thinking and coordination are starting to go over the last 24 hrs and my bp is down while my pulse is up. I usually wait to go to the ER until I cant put sentences together- keep using the wrong words and make no sense whatsoever. When do you know to go? I hate to go and be a baby but just dont know what should be the cutoff point. Any advice?

Try drinking pedialyte. It's a drink formulated for kids containing a lot of electrolytes to retain liquid. And of course force yourself to get water down..I'm still getting rid of my dehydration as well, but I'm really bad about getting the right number of glasses of water down each day.
As for the cutoff point before the ER..you don't sound like you're doing terribly well, but I wouldn't wait until you can't string two words together. If you feel like you need to go then for god's sake GO TO THE ER please :( So many of us question when a good time to go is, and I've come to realize that messing with things like this is just not a good idea. Health is more important than what other people think or trying to be 'tough.'
I hope you get something done soon, and I'm sorry you're feeling this way..I know it's not fun at all.

thank you.. i think you are right.. I am now running a fever and am so nauseous from all the water.. i am trying very hard not to lose more topside as well as down! I am going to lay down and try not to get sick and then will go. I do usually wait too long and then always say I wont till the next time. It is so hard to say uncle. Thanks again- you helped with just your reply. I guess we all look for validation,,, its so hard with a chronic illness to have to ask for help time and time again.. we all just want to be normal or whatever passes for it!

No, no believe me I know..I almost died from being stubborn that way this summer hah. I think too many of us are like that, but it's so hard not to be!!! I hope you feel better soon..

I went to ER last weekend for fluids and pain management. My labs showed that I had developed metabolic acidosis due to bad dehydration and I had low potassium. I had been feeling pretty rough with dizzyness and severe fatigue. But the point of this is not to wait to long. I have not been able to eat much for about 2 months now because of the pain, which caused the dehydration. Have any of you had this metabolic acidosis before?

2 years ago, I got hit with a stomach bug from hell. I was fine one minute, driving my husband home from his doctors appointment and it hit me in the car about 10 minutes from home. I was going both ways for 4 hours straight. By the time there was a slight break, long enough for me to get to the ER with out ruining the car, maybe 4 and a half hours, I was so dehydrated, they couldn't find any veins to put the IV's into me. THAT is how quickly it became a serious emergency, 4 hours. I ended up haveing to be addmitted and stay for 4 days so that they could build my supplies back up. I knew dehydration signs for kids and infants but I really didn't know that it coudl go so fast with adults.

If you think you are dehydrated, go to the hospital, please. Dehydration is serious business.

Thanks to everyone for your replies-

I did go to urgent care this am and they wouldnt give me an infusion. They questioned me very aggressively how I could know I was dehydrated. Apparently my crohns dx and prior hospitalizations and infusions mean nothing. They checked my urine discovered I have a bladder infection and sent me on my way. They said that because I wasnt spilling ketones I couldnt be that bad and that it was the bladder infection making me feel so bad. I dont doubt i have a bladder infection but i also know when i am dehydrated= my brain is foggy, i have no appetite or thirst, little pee etc.. it kills me.. i have been admitted to the hospital before when i wasnt spilling ketones. i can call my gastro and tell him i need an infusion and he trusts me and sets it up.. its not like it is anything i would be scamming to get to do! so i am starting the antibiotics and will see how I feel and then call him tomorrow if need be to get an infusion scheduled..

I am so sorry Valorie. That was a crappy way to be treated. Please be careful with those vitiman waters some contain stuff that is going to dehydrate you worse. I think the pedialyte recommendation is a good idea.

Sorry Valorie-I also always wait too long and then I'm sicker then sick. ER's can be so frustrating. I once had a nurse offer me asprin...yes you read it right...asprin when I told her the pain meds weren't working. Even the medical staff who are supposed to be professional sometimes don't get it! It's hard enough to explain to family and friends but you shouldn't have to to people that should already know. Only you know your body. I would definitly call your GI! Good luck!
