ways to beat thrush (i get it from prednisone)

i constantly get thrush in my mouth (a yeast infection, white patches) since im on prednisone. i have trued the nystantin mouthwash but that does not prevent it or take it away. the only thing that does cure it is diflucan (fluconazole) pills that you would take for a normal yeast infection. problem is i get it like every couple of weeks and its not good to take that much diflucan. can anyone think of things that may help that are no an Rx? i tired mouthwash too but that doesnt help at all. im not a huge yougurt eater but i have been drinking that danactive immunity drinks to see if maybe thatll help.

A good probiotic, primadophilus reuteri also aids with high cholesterol, I no longer have to take Lipitor, it also aids with lactose intolerance (I no longer have to use lactaid pills) and vaginal health as well (havn't had a yeast infection ever since taking it).

My daughter struggled with this for a little while. I didn't want her on any more meds, so opted for the manual approach. Get yourself a tongue scraper/brush. It works wonders. You have to be diligent for a few days or perhaps a week, but it will get rid of the thrush. I did some research and found that it was more recommended than the medication in terms of effectiveness. Good luck.

I suffered from repeated bouts of thrush for 2 1/5 years. Nystatin Swish and Swallow, the lozenges, and Chlorhexadine would work for a time but it would always come right back. Finally I broke down and took some Diflucan and then was vigilant in using a tongue scrapper. I also found that switching mouthwashes helped because the antibacterial types
    ine and Scope] also contain alcohol which has a bad drying effect on the mouth which Thrush seems to like. I use Biotene which has no alcohol and is formulated to help with dry mouth. So far, so good - thrush free for 2 months now - a RECORD for me!

excellent i just bought some biotene, ill continue using that. scope and listerine didnt work youre right on that. i definitely brish my mouth and tongue and i actually use the nystantin on my tooth brist and i switch it often so thats not a factor in bringing it back.

Milk of Magnesia. Swab your mouth with it or swish it 3 times a day for 3 days. That's what a nurse told me to do for my infant w/thrush. It changes the acidity in the mouth and kills the yeast. It worked.

There is also a losenger called a troche. My daughter had them 4 times a day when she had leukemia for 4 years. You suck on it until it dissolves. There is also a thing we called "magic Mouthwash" or "swish and swallow". They give it to all the children on treatment since they usually have no wbc and lots of antibiotics on board which equals lots of fungus!! Watch out for fluconzaole because it wipes out your good bacteria and bad bacteria.

thanks guys a lot of this helps. i see my GI on the 18th so im going to ask for something other than nystantin, maybe something stronger? we shall see

Yeah i have noticed I terrible odor from my mouth and have concluded that it is indeed THRUSH. I really don't have any spots on my tongue but did have a couple little dead skin white spots on teh insides of my cheeks about a month ago...when I picked at the with my teeth they bled. It has been about two months now where I have noticed an distinct change in my breath adn it is getting progressively worse along with this gross taste in my mouth like I have been sucking on a prednisone pill or any other non coated pill. It is really becoming bothersome and is effecting the way I interact at work and socially. What did your thrushes taste like in your mouth? did anyone have it in their throat and not som uch as the spotty tongues? I got an appointment with my Gastro guy but they will not just prescribe it for me over the phone. So now i have to go in and theysaid that if they dont see symptoms on the tongue or in the back of my throat they might not prescribe anything and will want to do a edoscope or colonoscopy again. urgh! I do have that food stuck in my chest sensation everytime I swallow food too. I read that that is a symptom also. Can any of you help. I just want my breath to be normal again! :( Isn't there a drink that cures the mouth and also goes through the colon to cover both ends if it is in the colon and mouth? Someone please help.
