Who drives the farthest to see your GI?????????

I drive to Indianapolis to my GI an hour and a half away. Not too bad- there is one in town..just not a good one. When I did Remi, i had to drive there to get it. I'm going to go on Tysabri soon and hopefully will be able to use the new transfusion center here in town.

about 45 minutes to an hour depending on the city traffic, we live in a small town 1/2 hour from the city.

Are you in Northern Cal?  Oregon or Washington?

Hubby grew up in Redding and I grew up an hour East of San Fran in the farming land.  I always appreciated I-5 because it was a direct route to almost anywhere and two hours' driving in any direction took you somewhere completely geographically different.  We lived in WA state for 2yrs, along the Columbia River, and we were about two hours away from the Portland airport.  After that, I've always preferred to live w/in less than an hour from a major airport, but we still need to live rural (horses).

I currently drive about 40mi to my GI at Emory, but it takes me 90min to drive and park because of traffic and lights along the majority of the route.  No other routes I can take.  ...without getting lost, anyways...  Lost and me, are not friends.

I have a 'care package' I keep in the car for EVERY drive, be it a short drive in familiar territory, or a long one in unfamiliar territory.  Change of clothes head/toe.  Towels, one large for covering my lap and several small-medium sized hand towels for clean up.  Plastic bags.  Plastic bucket with lid, lined with plastic bag for on-the-road-must-go moments.  Toilet paper.  Wet wipes.  Bottle of water.

I would not attempt a 120mi car drive without my care-package in the back seat and in easy access.  Tinted windows are nice, too.

we drove 3 days and 1800 miles once, each way. other than that depending on which one, 25 min... to 1.5 hours.

wow...........I thought I had it rough...........9 1/2 hours one way? That's like me going to san francisco........

well, I may have a small blockage now too........guess I better get on the phone and start making arrangements. Im still mad that nothing is closer

used to drive 363 miles RT (South St. Petersburg to northern gainesvile. fl)  The gastro there was great and he was the only one in my area testingthe Tysabri so I just used him the whole time.

when the test came to an end I found one closer...he is 92 miles round trip.  My office is 80 miles RT and he just past my office so I try to schedule visits on the same days I go into the office.

The tough part will be if I have to have surgery (very likely)...then I will be in a hospital that is an hour drive from my home and my wife will be stuck with the long drive.

I drive over 400 miles roundtrip in the rocky mountains. Trying to think how many mountain passes are involved....4??? Definitely need a 4 wheel drive in the winter!!! Yea!!! It was 12 degrees this morning and already snowed yesterday!!

I drive ~200 miles one way to Chicago to see my GI.  I do have a local GI too, but like some others have posted, I needed different/better care than he could offer me.  (He likes to treat everyone with Imuran rather than Humira or Remicade, etc.)  He recognized that though and referred me to someone in Chicago.

lamb61 - Well, yes, I "outgrew" the care. They didn't really tell me that until I sought a 2nd opinion because I was not comfortable with their plan of action at the time. That led to exhausting Remicade and now to the clinical. Had I been with the GI I'm with now BEFORE, we may of caught this flare earlier and prevented a lot of things. As my old NP told me.. "We have too many cooks in the kitchen." I LOVE my old GI and my old NP! They still take care of me if I get admitted to the local hospital....so I haven't completely drifted from their care. They are just NOW having conferences on Humira at my old GI's practice...though on of his colleagues was very familiar with Tsaybri... yet, I'm going after the clinical based on how I responded to Remicade.

Anyway! Glad I'm not alone! ;)
