My pain was in the center of the stomach and was awful before I went to the hospital but after they gave me antibiotics in my iv for a couple days then I have not had that pain any more I feel tender in the abdomin and my alymase and lipisine ( I think theses are the right names ) have been really high and then go down then up again. My gi feels something is going on and wants to get to the bottom of it . He has felt all along that something in the ducts was an issue he knows my hida scan showed NO ejection at 20 minutes. They did a ct scan , ultrasound, hida scan and mrcp and still cant see a problem in the ducts. I heard that if your pancreas and liver are inflammed etc adn cant take care of the insulin your glucose goes up so I am assuming that maybe mine is up sometimes because things are not functioning properly ?

Hes sending me to seattle to get the ercp.

what do you think is going on ?

The most likely diagnosis from your symptoms and labs would be pancreatitis. An infected gall bladder can also cause this, and you note a zerp ejection fraction as possible evidence. In your position I would proceed rapidly to the ERCP, as there is also an outside chance you could have a pancreatic or ductal tumor.

my dr was very unhappy that they gave me an appointment 3 weeks out but nothing I can do about it I guess.   I alwasy wondered why after all teh tests to look for galbaldder stuff he then decided to not pay much attenetion to that hida scan and keep concentrating on the ducts. Maybe he figured the galbladder wouldnt cause the spikes in alymase and lipase? Im not sure.

A coworker of mine, she had gallbladder problems but it never showed really on any of the tests. When the removed it, it was filled with stones like sand. The whole thing was like sandy water as she explained it. Could be a possible situation like yours?

could be.... they said the walls of it were grossly abnormal.

Sigh...every part of me is grossly abnormal! Please let us know how the it goes in three weeks. I suspect something funky going on with myself possibly related to the pancreas and/or gall bladder ducts. Any further education on this topic would be good to know. Hope you feel better soon and hang in there!

This would make sense why my glucose numbers are high.

What is the pancreas?
It is a "silent," solid organ positioned behind the stomach in the upper part of the abdomen. The body's main digestive organ, the pancreas is composed of different cells that serve distinct functions. Some cells produce digestive "juices" or enzymes, while the others produce hormones. The pancreatic enzymes break down the three types of nutritional elements: protease digests proteins; lipase digests fat; and amylase digests carbohydrates. Once manufactured, the digestive enzymes empty into channels (ducts), eventually draining into the first part of the small intestine, called the duodenum. Food that passes through the duodenum stimulates the pancreas to produce digestive enzymes. The most important hormone the pancreas produces is insulin, which controls the amount of glucose in our bloodstream. When an insufficient amount of insulin is secreted, the body's cells are unable to take in glucose, which raises glucose levels in the bloodstream and may ultimately lead to diabetes (though it is not the principal cause of diabetes). In addition to insulin, the pancreas makes other hormones, all of which pass into the blood that flows through the organ (not through the ducts used by the enzymes).

Yes Mom- I think you may have hit on it. I have CD in the duodenum as well and have had a series of gall bladder & kindney stones attacking me lately. My lastest gripe is foaming stools if you have been following my posts. Randynoguts suggested to me that the foamy stools could be from lack of pancreatic enzymes. Well if there is inflammation around the ducts or possibly a pancreatic stone (didn't know you could get one there too) that could be affecting my enzymes. I am also hypoglycemic which is low blood sugar. Some say this is a precursor to diabeties. Anyhow I think it would be worth your salt to keep a check on your sugar. Take your readings just prior to eating and again about 20 minutes after your meal and keep a food diary so you can see how the various foods specifically starch & sugar intake are affecting you. If your husband is diabetic you probably already know this. I know the food diary is a pain but it is HUGE in tracking what is exactly going on. Finally, how old is your husbands meter? Is it time for a new one? Talk with a durable medical person at a local pharmacy. A lot of times the manufacturers of the meters will upgrade there meters and offer a trade in program at no cost to you. Worth investigating! Of course this is something your husband will have to do since he is the diabetic patient. Also I realize there is the insurance issue/cost issue of you using his supplies, i.e.; lancets & test strips. But if you could check your sugar for a least a week maybe you could narrow things down a bit. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Thanks I think you are right I will keep testing and keep track. The meter is fairly new so I think its good. This morning my fasting count was 114 thats not to bad right ? but its supposed to be under 100 I think.

I had all of the same tests done due to elevated liver enzymes and actually got pancreatitis as a complication from the ERCP.  Let me just say that I've been in pain before but NOTHING like the pain that night, which put me in the ER and then admitted to the hospital with no food or drink for 4 days.  I vomited 28 times that night, and I'm not normally one to throw up.  My amylase and liplase (sp?) were through the roof.  So, it is very possible it could be pancreatitis if your numbers are up and if you start vomiting on top of it all, go to the ER.

Sorry if this is becoming a bore, but pancreatitis and gallstones are primary effects from gut inflammation. The inflammation increases gut permeability and results in bacteria and endotoxins entering the blood. The bacteria are the immediate cause of gallstones and the endotoxins are damaging to the pancreas. Alcohol consumed while this is happening will cause necrosis of the pancreas and results in chronic pancreatic insufficiency (which is nastier than it sounds). To reduce gut permeability, the known supplements that have shown results are: glutamine; zinc (50 mg - take separately from any iron supplements); Probiotics (acidophilus species vary widely in their action. A. reuteri and A. casei GG - must be GG strain - are useful in reducing inflammation. Not all others do that and some increase inflammation);Turmeric (active D will result in the turmeric passing through before it is absorbed which will cause burning in the rectum); Boswellia serrata (AKA frankincense - used for thousands of years and an effective reducer of inflammation via COX inhibition). I suspect that propolis also reduces inflammation (besides being a good antibiotic), but I have not checked that out.
