              Hello, I am 39 and looking at my first surgery. I have 3 areas that are partially blocked and on liquids now. I am nervous as to what pain this will be after surgery and how long it will take to get back on my feet. My chrons is in my bowel that is bad. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT.

I've had three surgeries for CD and my recovery time depended on how much bowel they took, complications like fistulas or infections, etc. My CD never went back into remission after surgery, so that prolonged things as well. If you are severely underweight, that can impact healing time as well. All I can say is good luck. I hope you recover quickly. Pain after surgery is manageable with drugs etc. After that it is important to listen to your body and not try to do more than it will allow. Give yourself a break and take your time getting back into things. If we can handle the pain of CD, we can surely handle a little post op discomfort!

Hi Malb My recovery for open surgery was about 6 weeks for open, and I had two bad places removed I had a bad fistula. I have gone into remission so glad I had it .I had a epidermal which was great for pain. As mentioned above it is less then the CD pains. Are you having it open or lapo? How long before you are booked ? It was worth it for me best wishes. lol gail

           hELLO, tHANKS FOR THE ADVICE. i DEFINATELY WANT TO BE UNDER WHEN I HAVE THE SURGERY. i SEE MY SURGEON MONDAY IF I CAN WAIT THAT LONG. iT HURTS TO EVEN HAVE LIQUIDS RIGHT NOW.

Jersey everyone is asleep during their surgery whether it be done via laprascope or open surgery. So you can stop fretting about that. I hope your surgery brings you to a long long remission.

Good Luck Jersey. Don't worry about the surgery. It beats the alternative! As others have said, the pain post surgery is bearable with medications. As far as recovery, that'll depend on how large of an incision has to be made (open or lapro I guess) as well as if there are any complications. I hope everything goes well and wish you a fast recovery. J (c.o.c)

I just had surgery on October 1st. I spent a week in the hospital prior to the surgery and then one week in the hospital after. The first few days after surgery were fine because of the pain medication. I didn't feel anything at all. The last two days were rough but not horrible. Obviously its a little hard to get up and down from laying and sitting positions but the best thing is to get up and walk as much as you can. I had five large incisions and my surgeon did not cut the muscle in my stomach. So that saved a lot of pain. I have been battling CD for almost five years and have been really sick. The surgery has changed my life completely. I can finally eat without being in pain. I was scared too but you would be surprised at how quickly your body bounces back. I got out of the hospital on a Friday and was back at work on Wednesday. Attitude is everything!!!!!!

Hi Jersey! I am having surgery on Tuesday of next week. I have 2 strictures that must go. They are way too narrow. This will be my 3rd resection in 30 yrs. That's good according to my surgeon. Hopefully it will be lapor., but might need to be a full open if there are adhesions. It takes time to recoup, but you will. I was on liquids for a week, then barely eating for days afterward. The more healthy you are, the less time you will be in the hospital.

Jersey just wanted to say the lovetolaugh had a rare recovery. Most folks are out at least 4-6 weeks. You have to remember that this is major surgery whether done via lap or open surgery and it really is hard on the body, and appropriate rest is very important too. Good luck.
