 Hope someone out there can give me some advise;

     I have been batteling a Chrons flare now for over 2 yrs. In that yrs time I have been to to ER many times and admitted to the hospital about 3 times. Just got out a week ago Saterday, but not for Chrons persay but I think related. Was taken from work in ambulance with chest pains. They are saying it is either stress or acid reflux. Well back to my question, I have been off work so much this past year, and have gone to work days that I feel awful (but for fear of loosing my job I go in) I was wondering how hard is it to get SSD? I have Chrones, IBS, depression, and restlessleg. I am also under doctors care for a spot that was removed from my breast that was found to have pre cancer cells. Yes too much I agree. I try to keep my stress leval low, but I find that with my job, kid, and illness it is hard. Sould I try for Social Security Dissability? Do the GI docs usually say in these cases the the patient needs it? I have not really talked to GI doc about this, yet?  Anyhone else out there on disibility with Chrons? Was it hard to get. I don't want to quit work but If it will help me and my condition, maybe it is what is best.

Oh by the way now I am on Predazone, 10 mg a day, have been on steriods now for 2 months. Started while I was in the hospital 50 mg at release down to 40 mg for 4 weeks then 2 weeks on 20, now down to 10. Face is swollen, sweating (and it is cold here) and having hot flashes. I am also on Pentasa 2 4 times a day. Pamlor for pain 2/ 2 times a day. and tab and half of 6mp. Next week they are going to start Remicade. Can't figure out how to update info on profile....................

Im sorry to hear you are struggling so much :(
I cant help you with the disability thing as Im from Austrtalia, just wanted to let you know it can get quiet on this forum on the weekends, so hang in there and someone should come along and give you some suggestions. Good luck.

There are people on here that have disability (either SS or through an employer). One thing to keep in mind is you have to be out of work for 6 months due to your disability in order to even begin to qualify. So if you think this is something you are going to need you should start saving up now to be able to survive during those six months. I am not sure if you get back pay for that time but either way you need a plan to deal with the lack of income. Others on here can give you advice on qualifying beyond that. I know the big thing is making sure your doctor is on board and supports you.

Have you looked at your last Social Security statement? Do you have enough credits to qualify for Social Security Disability? Can you live on the amount of disability that the statement estimates? If you do not have enough credits, then you would have to qualify for Supplemental Security Income. SSI has a maximum payment that is not all that much. You can check all this out at www.ssa.gov

:-) Yes you can SSD for Crohns but you must be off work for 6 months and have good med recerds. I have had Crohns for 32 Years and Im at the end of wat thay can do. I ben on SSD for 4 years now.

I have SSI, and it was tough to get. They turned me down for crohn's, but ultimately approved me because of my anxiety disorder. I live with my parents because SSI is not enough to get by on. I lived by myself briefly, but rent for my 1 bedroom apartment (kind of a crappy one at that) took my entire SSI check. My parents chipped in to pay my utilities. A new illness forced me to move back in with them, but financially, I needed to do so anyway. SSI rules are pretty strict. My assets can't go over $2000. I don't own anything though, not even a car, so it's not really a problem for me. If I didn't have my parents, I honestly don't know what I would do.

Really? That doesn't seem right. So if you've bought a house and saved some money for retirement when you were healthy you would have to sell your house and deplete your life savings before you could get SSI?

thanks to all who replied...........I am greatful. My doc does not seem this is the best time for me to be off work. He said that does not mean at a later time that he would not take me off, but not now. But it is good to know that If I need SSD that it is there for me. I have lots of documentation.........been in and out of hospitals, ER, and doctors offices. But I willlisten to my doc at this time and go back to work and see how it goes...............Thanks to all of you

You can own your own home and a car while on SSI. In addition, you can own a second home on a piece of land as long as you use it for growing food.

There is a special fund that can be handled by another person for you where monies, that come from someplace or someone other than yourself can be placed. A lawyer is needed to set up this account and a caretaker of sorts is hired by the courts to look over the money.

This money is untouchable by creditors and, does not count against you as income. It can be used for things like vacations, buying a home, car, etc. Most people do not know of these extra ways to get around staying poor while on SSI. SSI states that you must be low income but there are ways around it. In addition you can work part time.

The payment is low however, about $630 per month. You can also own 1 car while on SSI.

This is some very good information for those currently on SSI, but I have to wonder why one who qualified for SSI would not just apply for SSDI. I am currently on SSDI and they do not care about or hinder me from bettering my financial situation. I own my home, my wife still works full time, we have a few cars(most we owned before I was on SSDI, but I purchased my truck during the approval process), and nobody has ever given me any problems about the other items that my wife and I own. My point being that if you are going to do so much work to have special accounts and you have to hire a lawyer, why not just hire a lawyer to help you get on SSDI? I am not fully educated on the SSI process, but it can't be that much different from the SSDI process and you will get paid a lot more. Of course, I understand that not everyone has worked long enough to qualify for SSDI, but if you do I would apply for it. I never thought that I would qualify for it, but my lawyer had me approved in only 3 months and I didn't have to do much in the process but make copies of all of the forms that were sent to me. I was denied the first time, but approved on the first appeal.
