    I went to the dr yesterday and was in pain. He found  another abcess. He put a drain in. I was at hospital all day. I now have 4 drains since my surgery a week ago. I can't believe i got all these and they hurt terrible. I can take vicadin but not the percocet. It makes me sick and believe it or not doesn't get rid of the pain. He will not take drains out as long as they are getting 10 cc or more. Mine are getting at least 65 a day. I feel like gi jane or something with all these jps hanging.My radiologist says its possible i had a leak from the resection that caused all the infection. And that it might have fixed itself. Have any of you ever heard of that?Hes still trying to clear up all of this infection right now. I will keep you all posted,

What kind of drains are these? Does a radiology dr. put them in guided by ct?

Jersey,  I don't think that a leak in the resection can "fix itself" . . . if you have all of these abcesses, your Dr. should order a CT Scan to see what is going on in there! (That's just my two cents worth).  I had an abcess and they found an internal abdominal fistula that was causing the problem . . .

  Hello, yes they are doing them by ct scan. A radiologist is putting them in. They are jp drains. They haven't found anything other than the abcessess. I don't know why i have so many but they are painful. I go back thursday for another scan  and to look at these again will let u all know .

Ive had 22 rectal abcesses, sometimes multiple ones at a time. Ive only had a couple of Setons since for me they didnt work welll, and just seemed to cause pain. after the couple I did have the dr agreed to not go that route anymore. I seemed to work best with just packing, which you can remove after a day or two. Abcesses can be horrible, especially if you get one with a fistula that wont heal, I had one that didnt heal for 2 and a half years.

Jersey, that is what I was afraid of. I had this done twice with my first abscess....it doesn't work! You need a colorectal surgeon to go in an operating room and drain them, and then clean the abscess cavity out, and then let it heal from the inside out....this is the only way that you will get rid of them. Also, the surgeon will use an anoscope to look around for any fistula tracks....mine inserts a dye in the abscess cavity and then looks around with the anoscope from the inside to see if he can see the dye coming out anywhere. I had multiple abscesses until the fistula was finally located...and a seton was placed. Since then, I have been abscess free. I would also ask for an mri to look for fistulas....that right now is the best for finding them.

When they drain them the way you are having them done, their is no way to get it all out, and once the drain is removed, the infection starts all over again. I would set up an apt. with a colorectal surgeon and get another opinion. Good luck....abscesses are no fun.

  Hello, I will tell him to look for fistulas with mri tomorrow. I just can't believeve the pain. I get up to go to bathroom and start sweating and get sick and dizzy then have to lay down. The drive to des moines is 42 miles and that bout does me in.I sure didn't expect this with x mas coming .Dr talked like it would be easy. I have 4 kids to shop fpr . My mom is here cooking and taking care of us helping the husband but he doesn't do much house work at all. I'm hoping they can last mom and him without killing each other. She thinks he is lazy and not caring enough. will keep u posted tomorrow.

Hi Jersey glad your Mom is helping you threw this . A cold face cloth can help with the sweating . Maybe they can give you something to help with the pain .How is your incision healing ? Best of luck with your visit today. lol gail

Yes, please keep us updated. I wonder what the pain is from....I didn't have any pain with mine once the drain was in...but let me tell you, them putting the drain in was one of the most painful experiences of my life! The morphine they gave me did NOT work! Since you still have pain...I wonder if you have another abscess..how did your apt. go?

Ive had plenty of pain with drains in. My disease was just to advanced in my rectum to be doing lansing of an abcess in an office with local or something like that, so I'm always taken to the OR and completely put under, not twilight like with scopes but actually put under, I just cant handle it because of the advanceness of the dsiease. Not to mention my tolerance makes it very hard to even take something that will control that while I'm awake.

Hello i got 1 drain out leaving 3. They didn't find anymore tk goodness. My whole front stomach hurts to where i have to walk slow and hunched over. I did notice this morning when i take 30 mg of steroids it feels a lot better and i can straighten up more. The dr told me that was the steroids and that he was going to start weaning me off them so i could heal better. I dread that. He says maybe 1 more week with the other drains. He said my big abcess was as big as your hand, it is draining 60 t0 80 cc a day so maybe that is why it is painful. lol i am hanging in there.

Hi Jersey some good news you got one out that is great thank goodness they didn't find anymore. I was on 30mgs of pred. after my resection surgery and weaned off without any problems in a few months so hope it goes good for you. Are you drinking any ensure or boost to help your bodies ability to fight this off and B-12? Keep in touch. lol gail

That's good that he is weaning you...the steroids slow down healing, so when you have those abscesses, you dont want anything slowing down the process. My first abscess was the size of my surgeon's fist, so I feel your pain. The others never got that big. Once you experience abscess pain, you know what it is, and I got in to the surgeon's at the first sign, so they never had the chance to get that big.

Yea!!! One drain down!!! only 3 to go...keep hanging in there!
