My blood work indicates a vitamin D deficiency and I am having a bone-density test this week to test for osteoporosis b/c my GI said some people with Crohn's suffer from that disease, and the vitamin D deficiency can be an indication that I might have it or be at a higher risk for it. Does anyone else have a vitamin D deficiency and/or osteoporosis? If so, do you just take supplements to help? Thanks.

I have Osteopenia which is a precursor to Osteoporosis. I take extra calcium with Vit D daily.

I have osteopenia, too, probably just because I am older and have lots all the common factors (tiny, white, family history) of bone loss. I take calcium, D and a multi-vitamin. and do lots of yoga for weight-bearing exercise.

Also, if you have ever taken Prednasone (steroids), it makes you suseptible to osteoperosis . . . my doc prescribed Boniva when I had to have heavy doses of pred.

I have osteopaenia too. I take calcium and vitamin D daily, and am on APD infusions twice a year.

Got CD and Osteo at 30 and I am male
I take Calcium 60mg daily and 10000 units of Vitamin D a week

Hey all,

I have osteoporosis and I am only 40.  While I know 40 is not young, it is pretty early to have osteo according to my GI.  He feels it's due to chronic use of steroids and family history.  I have it really bad in my left hip. :(  Just one more lovely side effect to add to this stupid disease!!!!

Yup, All the risk factors, small, white, family history, long term steroid use. Had my first compression fracture sometime in my early 30's. Now I take birth control pills to help me absorb more calcium, extra calcium, 50,000 IU of Vit D 1X wk, plus 1000 IU 1X day. Something must be working because my bone density has increased each time I have had it checked in the last 5 years. Its still not good, but it has gotten better.

i also have osteopenia. i had been taking vit d/calcium before my diagnosis but did bump a pill up every day and i try to exercise once a day for at least 20 minutes.

I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis last Feb. when I was 28. My Rheumy is the one that found it and my vitamin deficiency. It really seemed weird to me to have a 28 year old male develop osteoporosis, but my doctor was not surprised at all. With all of the different steroids and medications that we are on combined with the lack of the ability to absorb nutrients properly, we are bound to develop this and other deficiencies.
