GSUonion -
Hi Onion, nice to hear from you again, yes we did have a good time in Atlanta. This is the way I do it and why.
I use an average of 5mgs of Pred. daily in my system because, after all of the research on Crohn's and all of the troubles I was having I decided that the normal output of cortisol (about
8.5mgs) daily was just not enough for a person with severe Crohn's so I decided I would add 5mgs of Pred. to help out the glands.
I knew, after all of the research I had done that inflammation was the "Key" for me. Get rid of the inflammation and I could win the fight. I had already had nine surgeries including six major resections and numerous, numerous blockages that were broken up in the hospitals and had lost enough of my intestines so that any more resections would make me incapable of absorbing the "good" stuff so it was time for my research to pay off.
I had my Adrenal Glands checked to see if they were normal, and that they were producing the 8.5mgs of cortisol daily, they were. when I added the extra 5 mgs. I knew I had to be careful how I added the extra to protect my adrenal glands. I knew if I just took 5mgs a day it wouldn't be too long before the glands would recognize it and reduce their production by the 5mgs of cortisol or maybe even more. So somedays I would take the 5mgs some other days I would take 10mgs and skip a day. Other days, I might take 20mgs and skip the next couple of days. My plan was to confuse the adrenal glands. It worked. The average of 5mgs of pred. daily has kept me clear from Crohn's now for 20 years or so. I continue to get the adrenal glands checked every year or two to make sure they stay normal. They have!
If I were you I would start by having the Adrenal Glands checked to see if they are normal and go from there. If you need me, just holler, maybe we can meet and have lunch some day when your downtown.

Found your post very interesting. Are you saying you have taken an average of 5 mg. Prednisone daily for 20 years? Do you have any side effects from the Pred?

No, no side effects at all. and don't forget, I"ve had Crohns going on 54 years now and I've taken a lot more than that during all of those years.
