Hi all

I've just been put back on pred, as Entocort isn't working for me. I last took pred over 3 years ago.  I'm starting at 40mg for a week and then tapering down 5mg every week.

Well I took my first pills this morning and here comes my stupid question - why do they taste SO bad?!  I only had them in my mouth for about two seconds before washing them down with water but ugggggh!  Does anyone else find them absolutely disgusting?  Does it help if you take them with a flavoured drink?!

I know it's a small price to pay if the pills work by I felt like I was going to throw up this morning!

Do you have Kool Mints there? I find it helps to chew one of those immediately after my pred. They stay in the mouth longer than normal mints and do a better job of getting rid of the taste.

I passed that tip to my mother when she had to take pred as part of her chemotherapy, and she spread the word to other people on the ward, and pretty soon lots of the chemo patients were using & raving about them.

Try it - it might help.

ps. I also find it helps to toss them to the back of my throat and chug them down with water asap. Even two seconds is too long, and the taste seems to be worse if you let the tablet sit on the tip of your tongue.

the taste is not the best but i always fill my mouth with water put the pill in and swallow. then i wont find the taste.

water first tilt head back drop pills in open mouth swallow at the same time..

Ha ha thanks a lot guys! Obviously my pill taking technique needs a bit of work. I also threw 8 of the pred pills down in one go this morning which probably didn't help either!

I take my pills with tea--I don't taste any of them unless they get hung up!!

If you take it with really cold juice it does help. The flavor is good at hiding the prednisone taste if you accidentally let it touch any part of your mouth.
Also, if you hide it in spoon of yogurt and make one big swallow you don't taste anything at all, and it's good for the fact that you generally need to take it with some sort of food item.

As for the taste, well, have you ever tried chewing a multivitamin without the coating? I'm pretty sure it's mostly anything that doesn't have the protective coating...you have to consider everything they put in this stuff...

Do you have the enteric coated ones? (red coloured).

If not, get them. I can't take the uncoated ones and always ask for the coated ones. The white ones are disgusting. Not sure why they even do them uncoated, there must be a reason, but there obviously isn't any reason why I can't take the coated ones. You don't taste them when you swallow.

Uncoated ones are easier to break down and enter your system much more quickly. The only similar difference I can think of is between pentasa and asacol. My body couldn't break down the red coating in asacol but was better able to in the pentasa.

Ahh thanks for the explanation :) well if you can take the coated ones, I recommend them. If not, wrap them in tissue then get dynorod out to unblock you afterwards ;)

That's what I've had to do when taking the Metronidazole I was on, had the same problem. Probably not the best idea though :P

I always get a piece of hard candy and IMMEDIATELY after I take the pill with ALOT of water, I put the candy on my tounge. I hated taking Pred....I took it for almost a year, I refuse to take it now. Good Luck though.

I have to take the dissolvable ones, because I'm allergic to the lactose in the tablets.  No amount of sugar and "grape flavoring" gets rid of that prednisone taste tho!  I have discovered that an Altoids chaser is the best thing for it :-)

one thing you might want to watch out for with the mints is sorbitol. don't know about you, but whenever i eat anything with sorbitol, i wind up with heartburn. some of the ingredients in mints like altoids can be pretty harsh. but the pred taste is awful for sure.

they are really disgusting! just get them down your throat as fast as you can... I'm on them now and the pills are actually 20 mg each so I don't have to deal with a bunch of little ones getting stuck on my tongue turn

I agree the taste is gag-a-licious. I've heard putting them in a spoonful of applesauce is a good trick, although I prefer to take mine with milk (lactaid or soy), but never water. And I always eat something afterwards, even if it's just a piece of candy.
