I would say it does mean 'active disease.' It's just that the level of activity varies so much and I think this is where the confusion begins...so probably say 'active' enough to affect your ability to function normally.
Still, I wonder sometimes too. I feel all right enough to go to school, eat, and sleep for the most part for example, BUT I still get cramps, can't eat certain things or suffer the consequences, still have to be careful about the level of my physical activity, and have other possibly Crohn's related problems(how we can ever tell?).
As for how long it takes to get out of one, I think it depends on the person really with the severity of their disease, the medication they take and how well the patient reacts to it, how careful the patient is with their diet and exercise regimen, and stress levels, as well as external influences. I really don't think we can put a universal number on this. Maybe not even an estimate either since some are in a flare for years and some for only a few weeks.
So much uncertainty about autoimmune diseases right now...
