Hi Guy's,

I have a bit of a stupid question to ask. I was with my GI today and he has increased my pred usage up to 60mg. With my just having surgery and a temp bag in, will the pred even get the chance to work? The crohns in my throat is well playing up just now and he wants to get it under control. I asked him this question and he responded, "it is either an increase in oral pred, or you come to hospital each morning for a jap of pred".

I cannot stand pred at the best of time, but this has me wondering. I wonder if this is another mistake by my doctor?

No stupid questions here. Well as always a second opinion is cool. I think shot pred works better for me, but rest assured I was on 80 mg of pred for about 3 years. But I don't think it would hurt to get a second opinion.

o my 80mg of pred for 3 years wow i would have gone CRAZY !! you are the woman for makin it tho that !!

wow mmmnavy, how'd you get through that and remain normal? God, I couldn't evn think of that. I am on pred now for 6 months up and down in dosage, but that is just crazy!

Yeesh!  I had 60mg Pred for almost 2yrs and I'm surprised I came out of that with most of my sanity.

How much of your intestines were removed?  If you have 'enough' then I suspect the pred will be able to work.  If you had a lot of length removed and have a very fast end-to-end travel time, the jabs may be better so you could get the benefit of the whole dose.

Hi Conor Depending on how your throat feels maybe getting it in IV form might be better for the throat .I was thinking how bad the pred,taste and if taking it orally is bothersome for you. I am not sure about doseage he has you on could call his office and see if it is correct. How are you doing now? lol gail

I did just that and phoned him this morning and raised my concerns. He has suggested that it  willo be fine for me to take the orally as the crohns in my stomach is mostly underontrol and I have very slow movement just now. How he can tell that is beyond me. Anyway, we have agreed to try it this way for a week and if no improvemnt we will give it by injection each day.

Other than my thrat and mouth, I am really starting to fel great. I haven't felt this good is a long long time. I pray to god that continues for a week while. Thanks Pal.

Conor, I was wondering if you could describe the symptoms of having Crohn's in your mouth and throat. I get large canker sores in my mouth and throat, is that the type of thing you get or is it inflammation? Sometimes my mouth is so full of cankers I cannot speak or smile due to the pain and I was wondering if maybe it is a Crohn's flare up in my mouth.

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

I have crohns from mouth to anas. When my throat is flarting, I get alot of pain in my chest along with a real sore throat. I get ulcers in my mouth that take on the appearance on canker sores. I bring up a yellow mucus and there tends to be blood when I am sick.Alot of the times must chest feels like it is closing of on me, as though it is shrinking! Go and speak to your Doctor about it, it is the best way to get answers. It is treated with pred, not nice I know, but it does work.

Thanks. So far prednisone is the only thing that has helped my mouth, I am on it now and am being tapered off. I will definitely talk to my Dr. about it. Thanks for the info and I really hope you are feeling better soon. It sounds like you have had an incredibly rough go of it all.

There is no doubt that Prednisone is the "miracle poison". I took it for over 5 years before I was finally able to get off of it. And now I get shots directly into the affected areas when I have my 3 month colonoscopy tune ups. (That may give you a clue as to where my issues lie)

Personally, I think a second opinion never hurt anyone. Although for "does it even have time to work" issue. I believe that it is absorbed in the small intestines so unless your temp bag goes from your mouth straight into the bag, it should be absorbing. The way it was explained to me was like pouring water onto a sponge. If you pour a lot, you loose a lot but the sponge gets soaked faster. But I am not a doctor so I could be way off line.

Oral prednisone is absorbed into the bloodstream very quickly, so I don't think there is a problem with absorption, but IV steroids are a better way to deliver the medication, no doubt.
