Other than the time when my dad needed an ambulance, I'm not sure I would say he was incapacitated. Just sick, I guess. Which, unfortunately, we on this board are all too familiar with. Regardless, it's scary to a little kid.

I am pregnant and I have Crohn's disease. My father showed signs of Crohn's when he was in his 60's..very rare. Now he has a bag. It all happened for him in 2 years. He is healthy now with a bag. I was diagnosed when I was 15 and now I am 34. I plan on having a healthy baby while on Remicade and Imurian. There is no solid evidence that this is can be passed on in my opinion. I believe I have just as much a chance as having a healthy baby as you or anyone else out there. Life is full of risks.

Lastly, medicine is advancing daily. I truly believe that Crohn's will soon no longer be a cronic condition. They are doing all kinds of research with pigs intestines ect... By the time my child turns say 60years old they may have a cure. I am not giving up creating life and loving a child because I have Crohn's. I will love that child and give it a better life than most in this world. A child can be born with Crohn's or a child can be born into a country under war... I pick crohn's. Put things into perspective ... I could go on and on about this but I will stop there.

Good luck making a choice.

I am 52 yrs old. DX'd about ten years ago...probably suffered with it for several years before that. The only other history of a gastric nature is my grandfather on my mothers side used to complain of cramps from time to time....but nothing to indicate crohns.  He never really was treated for anything and died in 1985 at the age of 97. He fathered four kids....they in turn produced 14 children who in turn have time have produced 28 kids...who have themselves brought another 8 kids, so far into the world.  I have a brother and a sister....so out of the 4 kids, 14 grandkids, 28 great  grand kids, and 8 great great grand kids.....I AM THE ONLY ONE with any kind of gastric problem....4 generations (not counting my grandfather's generation) that are in direct line to the only issue other than mine....54 descendents...and I am the only dx'd case of crohns or anything even as simple as IBS..... IMO ..it is just like the disease itself...different for everyone

Myself and my mother both have Crohn's .... However they have said that the genetic link is very low is was just coincidence.... Our Crohns is completely different no comparision what so ever.... I have been diagnoised for 7 years now and my mum nearly 30 years... The main difference and the reason why there is the differenc is the advance on drugs and the knowledge of how to control it... When my mum was ill there were no steriods to help and therefore surgery was the only option.. I have grown up watching my mum be very ill to well and when i was diagnoised i was able to take the strength and determination that she has had.. They told her when i was born she had 5 years to live we are now 25 years on!!!! We have a special bond and i love being able to talk to her and we can support each other and understand it all.... Yes i think about what happens when i have children and if they possibly have it but i hope that if that happens i can have the same relationship which them that i have with my mum ... She is my world and i dont think i would have been able to cope as well as i could have without her experiences..

emmaa I highly doubt if both you and your mom both have CD it's only coincidental, regardless if your CD is quite different in behaviour than your mom's, research has shown there is a genetic component/link for IBD it's just not completely understood how as it is with something like MS, there are many cases referred to as familial IBD where nearly every family member suffers with an IBD (either CD or UC), my mom has UC and I have CD, that's genetics.

It's estimated by researcher that if one parent has an IBD (UC or CD) there is a -10 to -15 fold increased risk that their offspring will also get an IBD.

I think you should do what you feel is best. After much discussion, my husband and I have opted NOT to have children because of my Crohn's. He had the vasectomy and we are looking into adopting a child and dosen't mind sharing a house full of Pugs! LOL
