Finding humor in it all

My sense of humor may not jive with everyone but I've found that being able to have alittle laugh about having an Ileostomy is good therapy. I've had mine since 1990 and I've made jokes about it since the day after my surgery. My friends also felt comfortable making jokes once they relaized I was truly comfortable with my new conversation piece. Here's an example: My best friend called me just before an informal dinner with friends that he and his wife were hosting and asked me if I had eaten yet. I said " No, why?". He said his wife had made a bean salad and he didn't want me to blow my hefty bag while I was there. That was worth a chuckle. Before my girlfriend and I left for the party I took a trashbag from under the sink with me. I didn't tell her what I was doing until just before we walked in. I blew it up and tied it closed then tucked it in front of my pants so it was dangling to my knees, then we walked in. When he saw me and realized what I had done he rolled off the sofa laughing. No one else knew what was so funny until he explained. Some of them still didn't think it was funny! Our attitudes are all in our heads. Choose to be happy!

Suddenly I feel like a colostomy bag could be something to look forward to.... Thanks for sharing

...this disease is crappy, and if you don't laugh about it, you'll cry. I prefer to laugh.

Last summer Husband and I were getting hay for the horse. We stopped half way through to get some soda and chips. Now, I knew better than to eat/drink while away from the house (bathroom) but darnit, I was thirsty! Well, of course my guts 'woke up' and I had to go and the hay barn has no bathroom. I couldn't run out behind their barn because then they'd KNOW what I did by leaving the 'evidence', so I got back into the open-top Jeep and told Husband what was about to happen and he'd have to load and tie the hay himself.
On the drive home, we were joking that NOW would be the best time to have a vehicle accident, because I could get away with saying "It scared the poop right outta me!"

Humor really can be the best medicine. Sometimes it is tough to "laugh it off" but you have to try. I'm looking at an ileostomy in the nea r future. This has been my fear for the last 20 years. BUt after reading some of the posts here and talking with some people, I'm thinking I may name it "Winnie." Get it? Winnie "the pooh." hahahahahahahahahahaha
