If you put it in orange juice, if she can tolerate it, you don't taste anything ..The trick is too put as little juice as possible, I use about 4 ounces
with a rounded teaspoon of psyllium and stir quickly and gulp , you don't taste anything but the juice.
I know how it is , I have a teenager myself and it is difficult sometimes, to let them take things that may help them.

If that doesn't work , they sell Metamucil in capsule form ...If she can swallow them. I Just feel for her. I was 16 when I started with
crohn's. It is just so sad to hear such young people get this disease.

Has anyone taking the miralax experienced accidents? My stools are finally soft but now I am having accidents. Anyone else??

Hi,

If a person has Crohn's of the terminal ileum (with stricture), I'm not sure that taking fiber is appropriate.  I have stricture, and was told by my Gi to NOT take any fiber.  Whenever I have constipation problems, I was told by him to take a stool softener such as Colace.  You can buy the generic, which is most likely cheaper, and the active ingredient is "docusate sodium".

Drinking more water may help.... I get constipation, too, but I only take stool softeners if things get too uncomfortable....

Has she been getting any cramps or nausea?

Hi Celey, 

No nothing like that. Even her appetite doesn't seem to get affected. THings seem to be moving fine since her last bout of it. Like me, she doesn't crave a lot of fluids. We try to get her to drink more water or tea.

I have the same problem.... I don't ever crave a lot of fluids, either... So, I have to force myself to drink... *It helps that I keep a glass of water on my desk at all times... I'm more likely to reach without thinking and drink*

Tom,
When I have aggravated my rectum due to too large of stools from being constipated or eating the wrong kind of fiber (peanuts, popcorn, oats, or grains) I will get so swollen that I will have pencil like bm's too. I agree with everyone that suggested some daily stool softners for a while and also increasing some "kind" fibers. I would be willing to guess that she will feel so much better. Constipation can be so irritating to every part of the intestines as it is usually large and stretches the muscles.

My daughter never has D, but used to have constipation until we tried yogurt.

Hi,

My doc tells me that D and C are the same symptom........when I'm flaring I can have watery D followed by C and on and on........he suggested Metamucil and for the most part is kinda puts me somewhere in the middle or at least managable. You can buy is unflavoured, and it goes down pretty easily with juice.

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for your imput. She seems to be doing alright now as far as the constipation episode goes. Also, been on the Imuran for several weeks now, and while I don't know if it's working yet, she is having no side effects thus far. 

How is Marie doing of late? Is she tolerating 6MP fairly well?

I find Milk of Magnesia works great and doctor said safe to take. Have not tried Miralax.

Hi again, Tom.

Glad to hear the Senakot is working well for Holly.  Marie seems to be doing well.  She is beginning to be somewhat nauseous around food again, has lost just a couple #, but I expected her to lose some after coming off of the Prednisone.  She has had some very mild cramping adn slight pain in rectal area.  I think it is related to the stress of starting a sport, that she has since quit, and due to eating pretzels and yogurt.  They are both huge no no's for me and I think for her as well.

Actually she looks great and seems to have energy.  I think she is doing very well on the 6 MP.  From my experience, no matter how great I feel or how long I have been in "remission" I still know every day that I have CD. 

Marie does have some numbness on her left side.  I haven't had a chance to speak with her dr or nurse yet.  Maybe it is her spine and she needs an adjustment, maybe the 6 MP.  We will see.  I have lots of arthritic issues with my CD, maybe she is developing it too.

Take care and hope to hear good things from you about Holly.  I was away from the site so long.  What turned out about her possible surgery?  Are they just going to "wait and see"?

Hi Jennifer,

Glad to hear that Marie is coming along okay. Just wondering about the numbness. Was she on Flagyl at all? I know that can cause that, but usually in the hands. Could be the Prednisone though, I know that Holly had the shakes from it this time around until tapering down. Has she had a spike in height/weight yet? That could certainly cause some aches and pains as well.

As far as the surgery goes, our GI said that it isn't an emergency thing at all, but it will be likely for her in the not too distant future. She will be having a SBFT again around the beginning of May, to see what the state of the fistula is.

Well, I wish she didnt' have to have surgery at all, or the disease at all, but I am sure her doctors are great and taking good care of Holly.

Marie is not of Flagyl and has been off of prednisone for several weeks. Her back does hurt and she has grown a tiny bit, so maybe that is the cause. I have carpal tunnel, so that may explain her hand numbness if she has it too, and we seem to be very much alike in terms of health. Hopefully her doctor or nurse will put my daughter at ease. Marie has a SBFT on April 9th.

My youngest is 7 and has had lots of potty problems. You probably dont' want the details, but I believe that she has CD too, just waiting for the right time to put her through all the tests. She is so tiny and seems to be coping well. If she starts blood loss, major fatigue, or weight loss I will take her in. I am currently more worried about what meds will do to a 7 year old than the disease affecting her. It is so hard to know what to do. Ugh.
Hope this preparation season is going well for you.

Jennifer,

I pray that your younger one doesn't have this disease as well. Dealing with one child having it is more than enough, compounded in your case considering that you have been battling it personally as well. 

I can relate a little bit about the concern, as I have a 12 y.o. son, and always am worried that he will contract this as well. Holly got it at 13 so I have some anxiety at times as he draws near that age.  

Good luck with Marie's next SBFT, I'm sure it will be good news. Please keep in touch and let me know. Prayers coming your way.
