IV line broke............

  my line split open today and will have a surgical procedure done early monday to replace it. got a hemostat on it right now.. hey it was 6 years old in feb. so not bad. wish me luck..

well, since it's monday morning, i'm a little late with the good wishes. ya know, if you'd run a little rust inhibitor through that thing every once in a while, it might help with the life of the hoses. it's got pump lubricants in it that help keep the seals and hoses from becoming brittle.

hello all.. the change went well. they were able to use the same access hole in the jugular, just had to move the tunnel over a bit.. even with 200mg of fentanyl and some versed, it still hurt pretty good. hopefully this one will last as long as that one.. everyone was very nice even as they had to work me into the schedule. the 2 drs even were joking. i was covered with the sterile drape up over my face, and they start cracking wise.. one asks the other if hes done this before, and he says "no, but i stayed at a holiday in express last night!" and i started laughing.. and then he says gee, hes still awake? oooppps! it took a bit longer than was planned as they had a bit of a time to get it over the curve at the neck line. and back down into the jug. even after over 6 years of having a tube through it, they say the vein just closes up like a self sealing tire.. thats why they thread the cable in first before they pull the old one. anyhow going back to bed for a while.. bye.

Glad everything went okay, sounds like the electrician on This Old House, putting in new wiring.

Randy...here's hoping you get at least 6 more years out of this one. Self sealing....how come only in that one spot. Drat would be nice if you were self sealing/healing before all your surgeries!

Maybe it took more time than normal because they had to make a run to Home Depot to get a drain snake to clear that plugged vein. At least they didn't first try extra-strength drain cleaner/de-greaser.

Glad things went well concerning what you had to go through. Rest well my friend.

onthecan... sorry but you have it backwards.. Picc lines dont last nearly as long as central line like a Hickman or groshong catheter.. the Picc line is the one that goes in the upper arm , up through the shoulder and down into the SVC. they become brittle and clogged much faster than others... from all the movement etc... the Hickman and the like go in the chest by the collar bone and are tunneled up to the neck where they turn and punture the Jugular vein then go down into the SVC. they are much larger diameter for long term use of multiple meds at the same time and much easier to maintain at home.

as for getting one put in, i would not be nervous. if the know what there doing it should go smoothly. by using a central line in the chest they do not have to worry so much about bad veins etc, however, you might benift from a veinous ultra sound study before hand to determine the openess of you peripheral veins. good luck..

Hi Randy thanks for sheading some lights on things for me i had the central for a while now and there telling me that the picc line will last me longer than the central line would now i know thats not the case which one are you did you get in Randy. Thanks Jenn
