Picc lines dont last nearly as long as central line like a Hickman or groshong catheter.. the Picc line is the one that goes in the upper arm , up through the shoulder and down into the SVC. they become brittle and clogged much faster than others... from all the movement etc... the Hickman and the like go in the chest by the collar bone and are tunneled up to the neck where they turn and punture the Jugular vein then go down into the SVC. they are much larger diameter for long term use of multiple meds at the same time and much easier to maintain at home.
as for getting one put in, i would not be nervous. if the know what there doing it should go smoothly. by using a central line in the chest they do not have to worry so much about bad veins etc, however, you might benift from a veinous ultra sound study before hand to determine the openess of you peripheral veins. good luck..
Hi Randy thanks for sheading some lights on things for me i had the central for a while now and there telling me that the picc line will last me longer than the central line would now i know thats not the case which one are you did you get in Randy. Thanks Jenn
